what to do with 48V?
« on: February 11, 2005, 07:15:15 AM »
I was wandering what t o do with 48V?

I am not used to this voltage, as here, in Croatia, we are most operating 220V AC and 12V DC. Some rare things operate under 24V dc.

I know of many advantages of bigger voltage, but inverters seems to be problem.

I can not find any in Croatia.

Any solutions? Maybe even homemade model?

It may not be to your advantage to use 48 volts where you are. In the US there is a lot of new and used/surplus equipment available that works on 48 volts primarily large commercial size UPS's, DC to DC converters and Telecom equipment.

Rule of thumb is use the highest voltage that is practical for YOUR application. 48 does have numerous advantages over 12 but you may find that it is more complex that you want to deal with. With only 12VDC and 220VAC you will need one or more 48 to 12 v converters and at least one 48V to 220 inverter and they simply many not be available where you are.

good luck

I am building a home made 36vdc - 120vdc input true Sine INverter

almost in the other people testing phase

my own will run off 96v bank and be able to do 40kw

but you could do any wattage you need from this design

After reading your diary I am intrigued with your design, how about an update to your diary on the project.
