Cheap genset question
« on: March 01, 2005, 03:32:28 AM »
Hi,

We seem to be flooded with more and more inexpensive Chinese goods here in Oz. The 550W can be seen in the fine print, by the way. This genset for camping claims it  is OK for battery charging up to 360CCA or cold-cranking amps. Any idea how good the regulators are on these cheap two-strokes? Do they cut out on 14.4V precisely? How many Amphours can the battery or batteries be for such a charger? I think the model is a GMC.

Thanks.

I have a generator rather like this one (I'm not a fan of 2-stoke motors):

The only problem I've had with using it's 12V output to charge batteries is that it's very slow (8A?).  I think that the little 2-stroke ones are cheap enough to buy one and remove & rewind the main 240V output to make a dedicated battery charger though, I'd expect you could get up to about 50A out of one without too much trouble.

By the way, I ran across this while I was looking for a picture - anyone feel like bidding? ;-)

No picture, it isn't surprising that there are no bids.
