help converting 2 phase ac
« on: January 26, 2006, 11:51:05 PM »
Hi all, I'm new to the board and have been looking to have an answer to this question.  I'm fairly new at this, but have some basic training in electricity.    Is it just as easy as using a simple bridge rectifier to get this dc voltage or do I need more like batteries and regulators?

I realize this may not be homebrewed exactly, but I'm stuck at what might be a simple answer.

A little more background may be is that the engine has 2 magnets on the flywheel and 2 coils around it.  Thats why I think that its only 2 phase although I could be wrong.  Its a little different from what I've read and researched on here with everyone using 3 coils.

Please help with whatever insights you may have.  Thanks for your time.

The best way is like this. Drawing is for 3 sets of coils.

If you are going to power something without batteries, you will want to use some high value capaciter across the DC output. 10000 mfd or larger would be pretty good.

Um......

Are those the coils giving your motor the juice for the sparkplugs?

2 magnets and 2 coils would be 1 phase......

I was wondering if it were 1 phase.  Some of the power is for the spark plug and some of the power goes to a pump that is only on a little bit of the time.

I found out some more info though, as the engine supplys 12V AC and 55 watts.  So would I just need 1 rectifier and a capacitor to convert to some dc?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks everyone for your help.  Went out and bought a $3 rectifier that is rated for around 8 amps.  Plenty for what I'll need.  Hooked everything up and it works.  Don't know how long everything will hold up (the engine gets put through the paces) but its easier than strapping a flashlight on.

Thanks again.
