MPPT Controller Suggestion
« on: June 15, 2006, 03:03:03 PM »
I'm looking for a MPPT charge controller for a 12v system. Will need about 20amps capacity. Looking for cheap - don't need any fancy features. Any reccomendations?

BZ has a 250 input-watt MPPT controller, the MPPT 250 model, that goes for around $150.  (I've never used one of their controllers, so perhaps someone else can reply with some personal experience.)  Since your targetted capacity of 20A is pretty close to the maximum for the MPPT 250, something to consider is whether you'll likely add more panels in the future.  If so, paying around an extra $50 to get the MPPT 500 model (500 watts input) might be reasonable if it keeps you from having to upgrade the charge controller later on.

For a small 12 volt mppt I'd recommend the BZ products. I've installed one 250 watt unit and the customer was pleased with the boost in power and smaller wire by hooking the panels at 24 volt and dropping to 12 volt at the battery. The digital volt meter and amp input meter was a nice bonus. I shopped around the web for the best price.

I had a BZ MPPT controller burn up after a month. BZ was very good about sending a replacement for it. The replacement burned up after 2 weeks. I double checked - nothing was wired wrong. I gave up on them.

I was not exactly impressed with some of their other products.
