Will a C-2C generator motor?
« on: July 06, 2007, 09:47:52 PM »
Just curious,(and before I blow any breakers) will my 3-phase motor excited as a c-2C single-phase generator still motor if I apply 240V just to the C-winding? I seem to recall the motoring part will work, but that it won't start that way.

Regards

Yes it will motor but the starting torque may not be particularly good. The ideal capacitor arrangements for motoring a 3 phase motor on single phase are not the same and you will need different values for start and run.

Why do you want to motor it anyway?

Thanks again Flux

There's no water in the creek this time of year and I wanted to some maintenance on the wiring and running gear. A few years ago I had a 120VDC compound-wound motor running as the generator and I just bypassed the blocking diode (and the ammeter!) to do my pillow block/drive alignment, etc.
