XBM Xantrex Battery Monitor questions
« on: April 15, 2008, 02:23:39 AM »
Hello guys,

I got an XBM - Xantrex Battery Monitor and I have few questions regarding the wire required to install it.

Xantrex provides an installation kit which I consider too expensive and it is not long enough for my needs. Their cable is shorter than the maximum recommended length.

Here are some facts:

In the installation guide, it is mentioned: "you will need a two-wire twisted pair connection cable (minimum AWG 24) and a three-wire flexible connection cable (minimum AWG 21)"

The 2 wire twisted pair cable is used for current sensing and the 3 wire flexible cable is used for voltage sensing, positive supply voltage and negative supply voltage.

In the connection kit provided by Xantrex, there is one cable with 3 pairs of wires, each pair twisted.

Here is a diagram: http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/1088/docserve.aspx

My questions are:

1) Can I use a 6 twisted connectors cable instead of a cable with 3 twisted pairs?

2) If the first answer is yes, is it better if the 6 twisted connectors cable is shielded?

Thanks,

Speo

Just my two cents..

  1. Sure.
  2. It can't hurt,just ground the shield.
