My guess:  When winding an axial-flux coil, he's winding the wire on two at a time.  Doesn't just want to solder the ends of the pairs together - wants the option to make the super-imposed coils switch from "in parallel" to "in series".  This is certainly an interesting feature when building the axial's stator, and in practice you have to be ready to build and operate a Series-Parallel switchover circuit to take advantage of it.  Something like Star-Delta switching, but with a bit more RPM difference between the two states.
