How long is a piece of string?

That is the context of your question.

Insufficient information to even try to offer an answer

You need to do some research and formulate a sensible question based on your plans / needs.

There is no way anyone can answer this other than "It Depends".

Think it over and repost with some detail and we can certainly help you sort it out.

I use 1.23579mm just to be sure I have the right twine :)

I am unclear on this. Is it 18" before or after knotting?  ;D

According to the emails I keep getting it's more about the "girth".  Now that's a word you don't hear used much except in certain spam emails.

(wonders just how far the thread can shift before a moderator gets annoyed)   :o

So far none of the replies have helped much because no one mentioned what color string to use. :-X
