The same questions
« on: June 01, 2010, 04:08:46 PM »
Hi

It rained here in the UK today so I couldn't do anything outside, I was also lacking in motivation to do much inside.  So I logged on and browsed this site, after a while I followed a link to another site, then another similar site. On all the RE sites I looked at the same questions were being asked again and again and from the wording some looked as if they were from the same person. Unsurprisingly the questions were all answered in the same way.

There was no comprehension of basic electrical theory ie ohms law, batteries in series or parallel, and magnets and coils of wire.

Also when the question was answered the same question was re worded and asked again.

Would it not be possible that when you log onto these sites for the first couple of times you are directed to a brief and simple explanation of the basic electrical theory, Ohms law, the difference between AC and DC, KW and KWh, and magnet safety instructions. If all the RE sites used the same text it wouldn't matter which site anyone asking unrealistic questions is pointed to.

I appreciate when you are starting out you can do daft things, holding an Ametek type motor with a 5ft twin blade and pointing it into the wind in my case,.

It might though reduce the number of people trying to reinvent the wheel and maybe toasting themselves. I had a gentleman tell me the generator on his boat wouldn't hurt him. "it's only a generator"!  240V 4KW generator.

Just an idea from a bored (boring?) mind....

hehe.

Did you notice it is often the SAME person asking the SAME question somewhere else, because they did not like the first answer?  :o

I actually saw that more than once today researching something.

Brian;

It would be a good thing.

But.

In this "feed me with a spoon" world nobody is gonna take the responsibility to read anything.  There are  questions posted here regularly  that simply searching on the title text yields an answer. That tells me the poster is either lazy or stupid or possibly both?

The only solution is for the users to tell these people to get off [or is that on] their lazy butts and do some reading.

As long as the friendly folks on this and other forums spoon feed these people it will continue.

I used to try to point this out  but got way too much flak doing it.

Now I just ***SIGH*** and feel sorry we waste our resources here on lazy people with some sense they are owed our time.

Some folks just should pay for help or services but it is not in my crystal ball who they are.

I AM NOT against newbie questions and actually feel that should be our target audience but folks should at least be able to form coherent questions and understand the answers. That may require some personal effort on their part beyond restating the same question.

Since you brought it up.

Hi Ghurd

Yes I must have been looking around for best part of three hours, all the sites seem very similar the level of expertise on the whole is also similar, so is the percentage of answerable questions and questioners.....

Then it stopped raining so I went out and fed my fish and checked the filters on my pond... ( suspended green particles not AC blocking )

Don't you just love retirement...

Brian.

Brian

No worries.

Another curious online phenomenon is the user who doesn't understand anything of the subject one week and the next week are dispensing [incorrect] advice.

Now I is getting into a rant type mode.

I try to remind myself regularly that we all started some place. Even if it was 5 decades ago.

"(Please don't ask me how many of these I have done -Rover)"
Yea.  Me too.   :'(
Except I did it on a smaller scale, which saved me from wind driven car alternators and grid tie inverters.  ;D

All that college was good for something I guess.  :-\

A glossary of terms with a brief definition.........this would eliminate a lot of wasted time re: questions and answers,....works well with the FAQ category............artv
