Mother Nature
« on: August 17, 2010, 09:14:42 AM »

I guess mother nature proved a point last night.  She is in control of all.  A generally overcast evening, looked like a bit of rain, and sure enough, it started to
drizzle.  Closed some windows, just in case.
Wind suddenly, and I mean even quicker than that, went up to peaks of over 90 kph, and rain that was almost solid.  Visibility of approx 30 meters.  In 5 minutes
we had 22 mm.  It was all over in ten minutes.  Light drizzle again and around 10 kph wind.
No damage, other than shorts, but left me in awe as to what can happen.
And of course, how can you plan for that? ???

Empty 8000L cistern would be a good start!

We were on the south edge of that storm. Got a few minutes of heavy rain and lots of lightning but missed out on the wind.

V.F.  Have thought about that over the years, but this is the first year in 8 that we have had normal rainfall.  The south of Alberta is
drowning, but we are just good.  Two years in a row, and I just might do it.

There was a sunny day about 5 months ago and all was well. A check of the weather radar showed a small dot of rain headed for our city. This dot of rain grew slightly on the radar but it was really nothing as it came over Huntsville. Minutes later there was huge wind and hail as it went overhead, then came the Tornado warnings on the TV and they even had a camera showing the tornado spinning live. Transformers were throwing sparks and trees were falling on houses a half a mile away. Two miles away a pickup truck with 2 people in it was swept off the road into the front door of a house and that neighborhood was torn up a good bit with 15 houses sustaining damage.

Then the sun came back out and all was normal again . . .

Glad you were far enough away Woof.  But I guess that's what it comes down to--luck.  It's going to happen, so you hope your luck holds.
That little mini-storm here was fine for me, but a neighbor 3 km north watched his machine shed roof sail into his pasture.  About 5 km
to the NW, quarter sized hail.  Me, well I just got wet.  Maybe I should buy a Lotto ticket.
