DIY Tower Winch
« on: December 10, 2010, 08:34:35 PM »
Hi all,
Just completed my winch project to better raise/lower my 10' axial on a 50' 3" pipe tower.  I was using a 3,000 lb ATV winch but it did not last as spool is so small and cable ends up a slinky.  Cable then kincks and bad things happen like bent parts and then broken gears.  You get what you pay for.  Luckily the winch broken pulling a log and not the gin pole.
Spec.s on DIY Winch
4,000 lb original rating per last owner.  Used by a logger with a manual handle.
1/2hp 1725 rpm TEFC  -  5/16" x 100' cable
67 to 1 worm gearbox - 670 to 1 total
Spool 10"od x 5" inside width x 4" id - 240 watts at light load
1 1/4" center shaft with new brass bearings - Weight is about 225 lbs
Double C-channel base - Momentary Up/Down Switch
Heavy lift truck wheels and handle for portability.  Only lower tower 2x year so will have available for other tasks and keeps it dry.
Pin clevises on both sides to clamp over my re-bar loop anchor
1625-01626-11627-2
Speed seems about right.  Will report back when actually used to raise tower.

Not only what thirteen said, but to protect yourself!! If you are using it in cold weather, and wearing a jacket or sweatshirt with
a hood, the hood drawstrings just want to reach out there and tangle themselves into the gears!!!
Scary stuff!!!

Thanks guys,
Yes I will add a simple cover but notice the switch is momentary just to protect from such or if a guy cable gets caught.
