Evaporator Cooler Conversion
«

I will be replacing the ac motor with a dc motor in my evaporator cooler. I will be using a 3/4 hp dc motor. My question is, 12 or 48 volt, which would you use and why... Thanks

48 volt motors are generally more efficient, but you get what you pay for.

Depends on the application, but I generally lean towards higher voltages. For a given wattage, the reduced amperage of higher voltage loads allows halving the conductor (wire) size.

Thanks, I was also thinking 48, but being that the panels will be just off the bow of the unit and it would take at lease 4 panels and batteries to achieve 48. I decided to go 12., Thanks again.

The motor voltage comes into it too.
A 90V motor on 48V will spin about half the name plate RPM.
A 180V motor on 12V will spin at about 7% of the name plate rating.
Lots of ways to get the same end result.

That's very true. Should of known that. Can't seem to leave the wonderful world of AC.

for 3/4th hp i'd go with a higher voltage than 48 if the motors are affordable/available.
Example: there's a 120vdc 1 hp 3400 rpm permanent magnet motor for 40$ on surpluscenter
i have no affiliation for them, but have purchased lots of motors and equip for too good to be true prices over the years.
