Need a little advice on L-16's for a 48v system bank
« on: May 27, 2011, 09:32:51 AM »
Down to the point of trying to figure out the best and most cost effective way to build a 48v battery bank for my 12 footer homebrew wind turbine.

What are any of you currently using?  Where do you think the best deals are?  What would you recommend?  ???

If you could do it over again what would you do different?

I've been told 6v L-16's   But which 6v L-16's?

I eventually went with traction batteries for my 24 volt system.

A Deka 450 AH set [bought new] and an 810 AH used Champion bank out of a Cat electric fork lift that was 36 volt but had bad cells so I got a dozen good cells out of it for my 24 volt system.

Up around 1300 AH in the system.

The 2 volt cells are the way to go it seems for larger systems.

Do not mistake me for an expert I just do this stuff for a hobby.

Windme: I am certainly no expert either,  and it's a hobby that is edging slowly to serious, but, I bought L-16's.
Two banks of 48V.
Not cheap, but hopefully worth it.  (let you know in 5 years)
Just where my research led me.

Many facts not given..

Is this just a hobby? then go with the L16's of some flavor.

How much wind do you get? If you are likely to have sustained full output from a 12' turbine then the batteries need to be of sufficient amp/h to absorb this or have a dump load fitted.

If this is your first bank of batteries then a second hand set is probably the best way to go, less painful if things go wrong.

Just my early morning thoughts
