Harris turbine nozzle placement
« on: June 15, 2011, 06:20:19 PM »
I have a Harris hydro turbine that originally had one nozzle installed.  I am upgrading the turbine with a second nozzle.  My question is in what of the 3 open positions should the second nozzle be installed?  I plan to run a 7/16" nozzle normally and turn on the second valve and run a 1/4" nozzle when the water flow in the stream allows.  So install the second nozzle left, right, or directly across the existing nozzle?

Thanks,

Joe

In reality it doesn't make any difference. The water exiting the pelton doesn't interfere with the other nozzles. There is little force in that size nozzles to unbalance the spin of the pelton. Many Harris turbines have 4 nozzles and there can be any combination of nozzles to get the right amount of water flow.  So just put the second nozzle where it is convenient.  On peltons that are running horizontally the water falls straight down so only two  nozzles are put at opposite sides of the wheel to keep the exit water from falling across the incoming water.
