4/0 welding cable
« on: July 02, 2011, 11:16:11 PM »
Normally I would not post a link to an e-bay auction but this seems an exceptional deal that I wish I had the funds for:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Wire-4-0-Welding-Cable-/330583267770?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf84c59ba

4/0 welding cable for just over $2 per foot.

I thought that also but he says he will ship but he has to know your zip for a shipping quote.

Something fishy there. 4/0 sells for 5 times that much. It has to be worth more than that for scrap. My apartment mains from the meter to the panel is 4/0 aluminum.

I don't see how you could make a cable of something that heavy. It's almost as thick as my arm.

4/0 is 0.46" diameter conductor.

Insulated MCM heavy copper here goes for $2.73 a pound - flex-a-prene 4/0 weighs 0.80 pounds per foot so $2.18/ ft value, here. Where they live the prices could be much lower... If they are selling it for what they'd get at scrap prices its a princely thing to do!

DanG, yeah, I was thinking of a 3 conductor cable containing 4/0. The listing above is single conductor. They don't say if it's aluminum, copper or steel.

I have welding cable that is hi-flex steel. Fatter than copper but melts at a higher temp. I wouldn't trust Al for welding cable even with antiOx paste. I don't know how the power company manages to use Al for power transmission unless it's a special alloy.

wc 4/0 2014B flex-a-prene is a copper many stranded flexible welding cable (Praxair sells it in their stores).  The guy is selling it by the foot and he will ship but you have to contact him for a quote. I thought some persons here might want it to make jumpers for battery banks or inverter cables. 50' of 4/0 for about a $100 bill plus shipping is quite a deal in my book (that is what I have requested a quote on).

Tritium maybe even jumper cables for your vehicle. I have kept a pair of solid copper clamps with me for over 20 years because they don't make auto jumper cables out of solid copper anymore. I took 3 strands of 8 guage leftovers from a a/c wiring project at work and made cables with that. 4/0 cables would be fun :o :o :o You could jump start a big rig with those as long as you had the battery to back it up.

He has 1/0 for about $1 per foot and 4/0 for $2.  100' of 1/0 ships for about $30 to my location. 50' of 4/0 for $28.

I am going to grab both unless he runs out of 1/0 (he only had 150' left this morning.

I have 100' of 1/0 and 50' of 4/0 on the way for $262.50 including s&h. Not too shabby. They have lots of 4/0 left.

I am pretty stoked. I just received my 50' of 4/0 and 100' of 1/0. It's all premium welding cable. Many copper stranded, very flexible. The 1/0 is green but for a buck a foot who cares. The 1/0 is for a new set of 50' leads for my Bobcat welder anyway. United Parcel Smashers tore up the shipping box and delayed it a day to repackage it saying I had requested a delay in delivery, I don't think their customer support people know what truth is, surprise surprise. ;)

Check out Airgas or National Welders here in the US. It seems I found some 1/0 and 2/0 they had in stock locally a while back and it was priced cheap at thier old pricing level. The salesman was suprised when he look it up for the pricing.
