Windtronic BTPS6500 Wind Turbine
« on: January 25, 2013, 05:29:51 PM »
Not sure about this, but they reckon at 44mph winds they are getting 3Kw out of this 6 footer.?

Honeywell are involved with this wind Turbine, but sorry I know I am a bit dim but the output figures for a 6 footer are strange.

Its not stiky enough to delete  ;D.
Just that  they are very well known for not including complete enough information to make a good decision.
You may not get much more than my reply due to the previous post on this item.
OR you may get tons attacking the company's tactics .
Cheers;

Thanks Bruce S,

But if i use the same logical evidence, and Betz law from the 'Betts Posting' http://www.fieldlines.com/index.php/topic,146179.0.html

 ie, SparWeb 's calculations;- Although 65" is 5ft 4inch;-

There isn't that much power available going through a set of blades 65" diameter.

rho=0.00237 slug/ft^3
D = 65 inches = 5.4 feet
Area = pi/4*D^2 = 23 square feet
Cp = 0.593 (the Betz limit)
V = 12.5mph = 18.3 feet/sec

rho / 2 * V^3 * Area * Cp = (0.002377) / 2 * (18.3)^3 * (23) * 0.593 = 99 ft-lb/sec  =  137 Watts

Even  *IF*  they meant 65" radius blades it would only be 540 Watts.

So the Windtronic has some magic Invention?
The more i learn, the more i question, or should i just keep sshh.?

No, when you see these snake oil machines you call them out and trash talk them to anyone who will listen. point out the facts and that the numbers don't lie. Otherwise they get away with it and they keep pushing their junk and screwing people who then trash talk small wind.
I aint skeerd of nuthin.......Holy Crap! What was that!!!!!

The Windtronics wind turbine was the inspiration for my daughters recent science fair project! After seeing the above posts I could believe it does not make much power. I know on her crude setup the blades were only 20" and that produced just under 10 watts of power at 40MPH. If I would have allowed her to put more coils and magnets on her contraption I guess it could have made about 20 to 25 watts. SO for one six foot wide I would guess the several hundred watt range is about the maximum.  Interesting set of equations. I will have to show her those and she can calculate the theoretical power! Thanks.

Hi jn_austin,

"The Windtronics wind turbine was the inspiration for my daughters recent science fair project!"

Yes, I did notice that.

I think your 11 year old has done very well, my 11 and 13 year old's just potter along and although they are creative, your young lady puts my boy's to shame.

Hats Off to the science project.
