Evening All. 1st post n a couple of questions
« on: October 17, 2012, 05:08:42 PM »
I thought I'd introduce myself, I'm in the UK and a volunteer with a local charity who want to make a wind turbine(s) to :-

involve some of the de-motivated  local young people
provide a power source for rural areas in the 3rd world.

My personal background is Chemistry and Computing, I've done some work with electronics in the far past and now I'm researching the turbine project.

I've a couple of questions that I've not yet found satisfactory answers for and I'm hoping to get them answered here :)

In a flat resin cast stator what's best coils or serpentine wiring? I saw some reference to vibration in serpentine stators is it a real problem?  Do they produce as well as individual coils?

I have Hugh's book on order cause I think it's better to start with a proven design rather than get de-motivated by making a failure.....

Here's a good story about casting a stator, should give you a basic idea anyway-

Serpentine is a bugger to do.  And the gain is minimal.

Screw up serpentine winding just a bit, and the output is less than regular coils.

"for rural areas in the 3rd world" sounds like coils are the best idea.
Thats most probably why Hugh uses them too.

Welcome.

Do some study first. Local topography.

Do you live in a good wind area? If the answer is no, then building a wind turbine may only be a pleasant engineering interlude.

If Yes, buy a copy of Hugh Piggots book. Many people on this website have started this way including yours truly.

The web site for Hugh is at this URL   http://www.scoraigwind.com/

Hugh also lives in the UK - Scoraig Peninsula. He can also supply some items that may be hard to find.

To do a good job you will need access to a lathe, drilling machine, welding, woodworking tools, fibreglass,  and of course, patience!

Keep coming back to this website and you will receive much help.

I'll try and put up a photo of my version of Hugh's 2.4 metre (8 foot) 12 Volts DC machine in a few hours time. I went to the trouble to improve Hugh's machine by using stainless steel wherever possible (except for the magnet rotor), a different housing for the AC/DC rectifier, thrust bearings. tail boom lock so that it cannot come off and various other items.

Here are some photographs which show my version of Hugh's wind turbine.

I regret that the photographs are all bunched together. I simply do not know how to put a gap between them.

Maybe the moderators could assist.
