Because the two coils are wound over the top of each other, and on both sides of the rotor, you can pull 50 amps from one coil without burning it out, or 31 amps from both, the heat generated is about same and it is more or less just as evenly spread out in the machine.
50 amps through one produces the same amount of heat as 35 amps through both of them.
