Is this practical if the price drops some?
« on: November 02, 2019, 05:23:17 PM »
4 of these in series would have a nominal 12v. The max current discharge is enough for most small cars. There would need to be some charge current protection. If one cell goes bad it can be replaced, as opposed to being forced to replace the whole stack in common lead acid car batteries.

Twice in less than a day a coworker and my landlord had car battery failures occur without warning, with one cell going dead. "Cheap" car batteries with a warranty from known suppliers are about $150 US for a small car (like a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla).

https://lithiumbattery.en.made-in-china.com/product/tCjnwscTwNky/China-Lithium-Ion-Battery-3-2V-100ah-Rechargeable-LiFePO4-Battery-for-EV.html  The storage capacity of these is quite a bit less than lead acid, but still usable.

Wow, that's about 1/2 price of an equivalent CALB.  There's gotta be a trick.

Hmmm.
There are some quality problems visible in the product photos.
The terminals are un-drilled & un-tapped in some photos.
Makes it pretty hard to install the battery cables when they forget that.

Also, plastic corners peeling up.

These aren't the droids we're looking for. Move along.

That was my favorite scene from Star Wars. The power over the weak mind by the strong mind.  8)

SparWeb the ones you list include hazmat shipping charges. The Chinese one list no shipping or customs fees. maybe that's some of the price difference.
US stock new about $400 each plus $49 shipping.

Good point.
"FOB Changsha, China" is not the same as "FOB Colorado, USA".

Still not impressed by the QA.  The E-bay cells will have the same problems.

That was a cool show!
Farscape on the other-hand was out there.

I liked Farscape, though that Scorpio guy was getting annoying after a while... :) Good show, as long as you got to see the mini series that ended the show... ;)

dnix71;
Apologies for the drift on information.

I'm interested in the batteries and their costs that you've included the link to.

IF you do purchase them, I'd be interested in the quality.

Cheers
Bruce S

Bruce S I recently had an anniversary (30 years) with the same company. Instead of writing a check, we now get to choose gifts from an online catalog. One of my choices was the Mega lithium battery car jump starter. It fits in your pocket, but does not have quite enough power to start a vehicle with a bad battery or no battery.  https://www.amazon.com/Whistler-WJS-4000-Portable-Lithium-Starter/dp/B06XC9SDJB

If these were lithium iron phosphate instead of lithium cobalt, they would need to be bigger, but would be fire proof. It is possible to make a lithium chemistry car battery, but the cost is still not competitive with lead acid.
