Anyone seen a gadget like this on an induction rotor?
« on: November 20, 2019, 11:19:42 AM »
I've got two 1hp 2-pole induction motors I'm converting to PMG's.  I've done a lot of induction motors like this, but never seen something quite like this thing.  This is the first motor I've dealt with, though, that has thermal protection.  I believe it's a thermal switch that discharges the rotor or something.

Is it a single phase motor? If so could be a centrifugal switch for start cap?

It is a single phase motor.  Didn't consider start capacitor, but that also wouldn't really have an affect on the project so that suits me.

That's what it looks like to me.  Many single-phase induction motors have a centrifugal switch that takes the start winding and start capacitor out of the circuit once it is up to speed.  When you disconnect them, if the capacitor is charged, you often get the a pronounced deceleration when the switch comes back in as it slows down.

Thanks.  I'll probably just cut the thing out then

It could also be a brake - some saws have them.

it's a start switch for a cap.  It was removed and did not affect function as a generator.
