The crappy eBay 400w turbine...revisited and modified...
« on: October 11, 2020, 11:31:24 PM »
Just I made a small alteration.

36 coil F&P motor rewired to 6x2c.  I needed a turbine that was suitable for a 12v circuit and I was lead to believe that this would do it, but the thing is still cranking out 60~70vdc unloaded just turning it by hand haha.  I'm hoping loaded it'll be in the 10~30v range of my little inverter...we'll see!  I'm mounting it on the the pole tomorrow morning!

That’s what I like to see Mak!!! That is a good example of DIY.

That reminds me of the Wright brothers.

Get the voltage right and you have a great thing going.

Good work!!!

Thanks MagnetJuice...this is the kind of thing I really enjoy doing and I'm hoping to have some more weirdo oddball projects flying this fall.  I've still got a dual stator version of one of these thing sI have to do something with haha

I know this forum likes pictures more than videos, and I'll try to get some good pictures from the setup later this morning, but I video everything. I just managed to get monetization status on my youtube channel a few days ago.  I'm hoping with a little effort I'll be able to get my channel to pay for my tinkering :D

Part 2: https://youtu.be/sfkH82PLhd0

I'll have Part 3 up later this morning I think.

Cool vids,,what about rewiring the stator,, with a bit thicker wire,,?

^Exactly.  If you were willing to undergo the hassle of rewinding an F&P you'd be better off spending your effort going full axial flux instead.  The F&P stators are actually pretty capable in the right hands and all they really need is a little alteration in the coil configuration.

So that's what it takes to get Youtube views to pay for your hobby!  ;)
You're still having fun, which is what I like to see.
Your cat, not as much...

Looking forward to see it go up the tower.
No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.

Already raking in almost $2 a day in revenue! lol

I got it up on the tower earlier today but haven't had enough wind to get it going...so it's mostly "no news".  We had a couple blows big enough to get all the others turning, with the exception of the Heli, though and it didn't kick over.  I'm 80% certain I'm going to have to get some bigger, meatier blades on it.  Going to have the same struggle as the Heli:  will probably make a lot of power once turning but it's going to take the breath of God to get it to turn.

How much is a wind turbine such as this selling for?
With a direct drive washing machine motor upcycled for the generator?

Especially if you want to use the original 1 mm wire and find out AFTER taking it apart, its a copper coated aluminum!!
Why not wind another smaller wire over the current one and get another type of energy out of it?

makenzie71 You need longer wings for windgenerators.
I have Istabreeze 1500 and made wings extensions from aluminium. Diametre now near 2.5M
Before was about 2.2 Metre.
And I have friends here too. Nato base is 10km away.
Happened to be on picture.

This one will probably have to have some more aggressive blades but I've waiting for some real wind to hit it and see how it does.

Forget the vid number,,the one you were having a hard time stuffing the wire down the pole,,,had to lol,,standing under a ladder,,plus a Black cat crosses your Path,,Murphy most likely hanging around also,,😜.  Great vids,,glad to see new builds,,

Margusten,,,I’ve tried those Root mounted blade adapters ,,works great for low wind speed areas,,but loses out in higher wind areas,,extra drag really hinders RPMs in higher wind
Speed,,have you
Noticed the Same,,?

Added some assistance to the arms and it started grabbing the air really nicely!  But then it was too much for the tail and kept turning out of the wind so I had to add some more tail!

Those large extensions near the root are probably making it start easier but they have to limit your RPMs.
I'd suggest this ogee shape.

The arrow is where you'd bolt it on the mount.  The top is the side that faces the wind.  It is counter-intuitive that the actual ogee blades extend forward but that was the best I found through experiments.

I got all the videos (so far) sorted out into a playlist if anyone is interested: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTrFLWc8ummKqpwRguozKCh3UqFrh5Dr6

I'm working on getting some new meters set up so I can see what kind of output it's actually doing.  We got good wind today and it's boogying along and hasn't exploded yet!

Hi,
I’ve got an i2000 and would like to make blades larger how do these work and how to make them?
Thanks

I tried going that route and it didn't work.

The 107cm blades that come with the i2000 are perfect for that turbine, why do you want to make them larger?

Cup shapes add resistance as your rpm's increase.  The cup shapes fold up as rpm's increase, increasing drag.  The whole point of the ogee is that it folds down to the plane of the blades, to minimize drag.

They can be manufactured most easily on a pan brake.  If you only have a folding bar ($15 at Harbor freight) then you can still manufacture the ogee forms rather easily.

As simple as the shape looks, it is very quick to accelerate.  I've tried both cupped and ogee designs and the performance was substantially better with the ogee.
