Hmm? I Wonder What They're Building Here
« on: September 02, 2023, 08:28:24 PM »
A large excavated pit in the middle of a prairie field with a thick circular foundation of cement and rebar.

I'll have to post some more pictures as construction continues.

It does look like it could be a nuclear missile silo and there are several other identical ones being built nearby. They could be underground bunkers for Musk and his his friends.

As long as it's just a big gopher and not a badger. I'm more comfortable poking around this hole than some of the other holes I find around here.

Now that they took the plastic off the cement, it looks like they unearthed a flying saucer.

They've been taking their time on it. They must be doing all the sites to the same stage so they are all done at the same time.

Bingo!

Next stage is position all the tower segments and the turbine assemblies, have blades laid out for lifting THEN they bring in a crane and go to town on assembly. I watched them put up 6 towers in one day! Next day they lifted the turbines and placed them and started attaching blades which took longer due to needing workers dangling out over a 300 foot drop!

The base is finally complete and filled in. I guess the next step is to bring out and erect the tower.

Considering that the final height will be about the same as the Calgary Tower, the base is surprisingly small.

Well there doesn't have to be a fancy elevator and a restaurant on top of this one!

Although... you make me think...  A restaurant on top of a Wind Turbine Tower would be AWESOME.

At least one in the UK has an observation deck for visitors...

Hope that has an elevator up to it! The internal ladders really suck to climb! Went up one of the early ones to troubleshoot the control electronics that weren't responding to the radio control signals. Turned out the generator was putting out a LOT of RFI so it was back to the drawing board for the engineers.

There's also a wind turbine at the top of Grouse Mountain overlooking Vancouver that has an enclosed viewing platform that is open during the summer. I was up there a few years ago with the kids' school field trip. I don't have any pictures though. I think the glare off the glass must have ruined them.

The tower is now half built and the blades have been brought out.
