Tell me about the Skystream 3.7
« on: November 08, 2023, 03:59:12 PM »
My understanding is that this company has gone belly up, but they seem to still have an operable website.  Is there still factory support for these turbines?

It looks like they were meant to be self contained grid tied turbines and have an inverter built into the nacelle.  Is that accurate?  There’s four wires going down the pole, though, so i’m a little lost on figuring out how that’s suppose to work.

Someone local to me has one on the ground.  Blades are busted.  Thinking of offering him scrap value for it just ti play with, but finding operating voltages and stuff is being a bit tricky.

There is a fair amount of infor on that forum. There are some near me in Normandy France that have stopped working, mostly to do with the lectronics being housed up in the nose cone.
Everything is possible, just give me time.

I never saw one up close, but the internals may be workable.
There's one still working in Montana (I saw it last month from the I-15 as I whipped by at 90mph).  So they're not all dead but I understand what you mean - they had a lot of issues and brought down SWWP in the process.

An old article:

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.

In my town we have one. But it is not spinning for years now.

I have tried to adopt it but the municipality does not want to sell/grant me it.

It is a shame as it is the second best performing in the horizontal category I know of.

ahhhhhh... finally I think I understand.

The reason they do not fix it is because having these blades spin while kids are playing nearby is just not responsible.

I agree. That is the whole reason why I went to VAWT

I base my statement regarding skystream being the second best on;

Ok it is a dutch paper but it should be easy enough to translate these days.

There's one still working in Montana

Hahhaaha how applicable. The montana is ranked #1 the skystream being #2
What a coincidence ;)

But in practical terms both have a too large wing span to be allowed for us mere mortals to put on our roofs by my local counsil. It is a conspiracy to keep us depended on the powers that be !

They put several up in PA in high visibility places.  There was one at the college I went to and I think it's still going almost 20 years later I think...

It's possible that even if the company has gone under, there might still be third-party support or DIY communities for those turbines. The inverter in the nacelle does sound like a grid-tied setup. The four wires might be for power transmission and control.
