Large Rotors

Hi All,


Finally got alittle bit time to work on this beast.

Built a test stand last week so I could set it up to do some coil

testing, Kind of a Home made dyno. Don't have any pic's of it right now

but I will be sure and post some.


I have made some changes to the mag's they are no longer the 2x1x.5

On the advice of DanB and Flux(thanks guys)they are now 3x1x.5 neo 40's


The little bit of coil testing that I did was done by spinning it by hand  

I'am still working out the drive to spin this thing.


One rotor test One coil,150 turns of 16g (guessing) 100 rpm

18 open volts AC. Have one of those digtal tacts from e-bay headed my way.

I've seen as much as 23 volts spinning it as fast as I can by hand.


Ok, how come's the some times you feel like a nut thing !


Decided to put on the second rotor to see what it would do.

You definitely need two people to handel these thing's got it all line

up, and what the heck --------   ---------  Looks like I made one small error.


I had super glued the mag's on the worng side of my index mark on one of the rotor.

never use a felt tip marker ! Drill-em.


Anybody know how to soften up super glue ???

I seen super glue dissolver at the hobby store.

put a wooden block up against your mag..then hit the block with a hammer..

the mag should pop right off..being that they are nickle plated super glue

dosent really have that tight of a grip on them..............

pic's are a little old in my files , But it taken alittle while

(Ok a long time ) to get this far.

Honey due list was a mile and a half long. Got to keep the misses happy :)


Those are the rotors and coil lay out that am working with,

I just added 1x1x.5 neos to the 2x1x.5's to get the 3 inches of mag's.


As far as the 8 coils per phase haven't decided yet, could be 3 phase or maybe

even 6 phase, just don't know at this time. need to do some more coil testing.


But I sure do like the sound of making it a high voltage machine, and stepping it down for some battery charging, and hot water heat.

if you scratch up the side your going to place glue on they hold better..

sharp knife-- sand paper......

This stuff is usually acetone (Iso-propanon). It is also the stuff that is used as accelerator, to instantly make cyano-acrylate glue (superglue) set.


To the best of my knowledge it can't be used to dissolve or loosen a connection made by superglue.

Wow! what a rotor.... gee i wish i had the metal to build one of these giants... They'd do excellent with my low-RPM machine :)


How did you fabricate the metal plates? did you order them somewhere? some local shop? or did you reuse some big metal sheets?

By the writing on there, I'd say that's brand new metal, and I'm guessing about a half inch thick to boot.  I'm surprised it's only a five hole hub.  I was worried that I should have went to 6 or 8 for my 14ft machine.  Perhaps I'm over-estimating things.


It's got to be frightening assembling those rotors onto the hub.

This will work

Get yourself some utility razor blades (the ones that are used for cleaning paint etc.

Place the razor blade on the metal to magnet interface

lightly tap on the blade and it will make its way between the two

warning-you might lose the nickel coating.

Also one blade will only do a couple of magnets then you have to replace it.

Theses were cut out by a local shop, using a water jet.

Next time Iam going to be a little more pickie about the plate I buy.

Had to do a little work on them to get them to run true !

Your right about the rotors it is brand new metal and half inch thick

47 lbs for one rotor.


The hub and axle has a 3500 lb capacity, 5X5 bolt pattern.

Not to worried about, this Alt is going to set horizontal.


And yes it is down right scary assembling theses things,

I sure wouldn't what to get the fingers in the way. ;)

I throught I'ed also pass this along,


Any of you guys that live near or around  the Wichita, kansas area might what

to stop at the yard store, found some nice 5 1/4 round .125 wall

steel pipe 20 foot long, for 2.00 a foot, looks like some nice tower making matrial

got 6 of them for myself.

home brew-

made from

"baking soda and water"

get old, say, hair spray pump bottle,

mix about a Tbl spoon with 2oz water

place some super glue on something

spray

watch instantly set.

Another neat trick is to drop some on a large water puddle, "super glue".

Watch what happens.
