1yr Check-up
« on: November 24, 2008, 12:56:52 AM »
My wind turbine has now been in operation for one year.   Overall the machine fared pretty well.  The system was left to run through the winter to gather data and put the system through its paces.    The highest recorded wind gust was 63 mph.

The stainless steal tape on the leading edge of the blades works well protecting the blades   The tape ends began to peel up slightly at the corners.   Before lowering the turbine, I could hear a low whistling sound, most likely caused by the tape pealing at the corners.

There was a little play in the rotor bearing.   The gap between the stator and rotor was great enough so no contact occurred.   Removed the prop and discovered the castle nut loose against the cotter pin.  Tighten the nut one notch took all the play out.  Although taking up on the nut made the rotation of the rotor a little snug.

The stator should no indication of overheating, not discoloration.

The split connection used on the weather station communication cable became corroded.  It was replaced. The signal from the weather vane and anemometer was restored.  This time the connections were sealed with dielectric silicon.  Special thanks to APRS for sending a replace next day air.

max size for photos on this board is 640 x 480 pixels not 800 x 600 keep that in mind in the future please

I like the look of those blades, the workmanship and finish is excelent.

How big are they?  they look about 3-4 feet long.  I too have looked through the rest of your files and saw the laminations process, I presume that these blades are the end result, what are they made from?

A nice tidy job all-round, doesn't look like it's been in the air a year.

Thanks... This has been a fun and informative project.  I've learned

much from the great group of people on this board sharing.

The blades are 4.5 feet making a prop diameter of 9'.  They are carved

out of spruce. After taking a full year of beating by the elements, the

blades are in excellent shape and should provide several years of

service. The finish is outdoor gloss rustoleum spray paint.

Here are sequence pics making the blades.

The software is spreadsheet Excel. Did a little programing using macros and visual basic to update the data.

Boondocker,

Just an idea! With the tape peeling back, would it work better to run the tape all the way to the hub? Air speed would be lower at that point and it may not start to peel. Nice to know that everything is holding up.

I don't claim to be an electrical engineer. I just know enough to keep from getting electrocuted.

Windy,

It may.  For now trimmed the corners of the tape. Made them have a larger radius.

Hi Boondocker,

Got a question for ya, where did you pick up your stainless tape at.  I have plenty of coils of steel to choose from back at work but always worried about getting the stuff to stick.  The thinnest would be about .010 304 ss and also have copper at about .020.  Hopefully, you can get back with me but I'm up at my parents residence also on Beaver Island.  Will be leaving on friday to head back home.  Thought I'd see about stopping by to take a look and do a little jaw jacking.  Let me know when you get a moment. Thanks chad

Sourced the tape from JC Whiney.

I don't live on the Island. Was there first half of the month for archery season.

Stop by the Erin Motel and introduce yourself to my Dad, Roy.   If it doesn't interrupt the deer hunting he'll likely show you the project.

Hi again,  Thanks for the link.  The prices in Mcmaster Carr was quite higher and the prices at Jc are a little easier to swallow.  The hunting here has been poor this year hopefully you and your dad has had better luck than us.  I'll stop by and say hi before I go.  Thanks again for the info, Chad

Hello!

Just a real quick comment on tape.

Many types of tapes stay "stuck" better if you can avoid sharp corners such as 90deg.

It may be better if you cut a generous radius at the ends, makes it less likely to "peel back".

An old trick learned many years ago.
