Cave/Hole in basement
« on: December 01, 2007, 08:26:19 PM »
Hello,

I have a 30 ft deep cave in the hole of my basement in which 52 degree air is always coming out.  I have a wood burner heater down there and was wondering if I would be able to heat this air then blow it throughout the entire house.  The opening in the floor is about 2'X2'.  Any ideas would help.  Its freezing here in Iowa.

Regards,

This is a bit wide of topical but its a slow day.

Cave? Is it a well or cistern? If you have a natural cave under your basement floor i would think you should be worried about it becoming a sinkhole and swallowing your house. If you want to use it for heat get a geothermal heat pump (there are usually a bunch on Ebay) and put a heat exchanger loop down the hole.

I believe it was a cystern but someone kept digging it out deeper.  However when down there it is like about 4 x 8 ft opening in between HUGE limestones.  The house 100 yrs old and built into a north facing hill on top of limestone.  I would like to heat/cool off of the grid if possible.

You may have a Jack pot!!!  But they will need more info.

Geothermal heat is a blessing, all you have to do is make up the rest.

Here are more details as far as dimentions go.  I am limited by ms paint so bear with me. I hope it works.

Could someone give me a link to the type of heat exchanger needed for this specific application?

Thanks for your help.

Take a look at the following link:

Of course it's from an energy company.

You may find it useful to read up on the German "passive house" standard. The first major point is nothing new, its just super insulate, put in triple paned windows, seal up all the cracks.

The problem in a very well sealed house is the air gets stale (CO2) and moist from people breathing, so a certain amount of air needs to be turned over each hour with the outside air.

The second major point is that incoming air should be pulled through earth tubes, so 20F outside air will be warmed to to perhaps 45 F from the 52F temps you've seen.

The third point is to have a long heat exchanger that allows the 45F air to slowly pass alongside the exiting house air that has been warmed by your heating system to perhaps 75F?

as the 75F air is leaving it warms the 45F air to about 60F. You then still have to heat the air from 60F to 75F, but the heating system and your fuel costs (whether its wood/propane/other) will be greatly reduced for the life of the house.

If your cave has cracks at the other end that will feed air inward, you may be able to seal it off by your house and draw 52F air from it (one way) as your "earth tube".

There's dozens of good ideas at "builditsolar.com". Best of luck.

You may want to test the air in your cave before going to far there could be toxic fumes in the bottom you cannot see or smell. A candle would give you a idea of where the air is flowing from inside your cave. There may even be a bigger opening close by under ground. The history of why it was dug would be interesting. A drilling company in your area might have an idea of what is under your home. Check for minerals? MTROY

I have had it checked for Radon but nothing else.  However I do have a lead mine behind the house that I filled in for safety reasons.
