PM Motor Opinion...
« on: May 18, 2008, 10:53:02 AM »
Has anyone used or have an opinion on these motors...

http://www.dunkermotoren.de/default.asp?id=9&mid=12&lang=2

The one I have is a 24v model. I think it came from an automatic sliding door assembly as it had a gearbox assembly attached to it, although I'm not sure as it was found on the side of the road. I tested the motor by attaching it (with gearbox removed) to my cordless drill and got 18.6 volts at "full power" with an almost dead battery. My first opinion is that it should make a good gen with little effort as it spins easily with the turn of the finger. I would just like to have a unit to charge a couple of 12v batteries. This will be my first attempt to make a wind generator, but I did experiment with an old 16 inch aluminum bicycle wheel with metal ceiling-fan blades from a 52" unit riveted on and it rotated freely with light-moderate winds here in south-central Texas (San Antonio). Anyway, any opinions and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day!

I would shy away from any motor that comes with a gearbox.A.k.a.Gearmotor

Have fun playing and learning from it though.

Any particular reason behind your thoughts? I am assuming the gearbox was simply to help move the big, heavy glass doors (it was geared down real low) and providing for a more streamlined installation. It looks like a "worm-drive" motor.  With the gearbox removed, it looks just like any other PM motor I've seen.

"Providing a more streamlined application"You hit the nail right on the head.If the motor could drive the door without gearing you would have a beast without the beauty.

Actually, what I said was "streamlined INSTALLATION" meaning that the unit could be mounted parallel to the door, reducing the space required to hide the motor.

I am still not understanding how the gearbox would affect the power output if it is removed. The motor spins MORE freely without the gearbox, which should allow the unit to create more RPMs in less wind. Your reply is very vague. NE1 else want to comment on this motor... maybe provide some references or share some experiences. I know I can just do trial and error, but I would like to have some comparison values.

I haven't built one yet, but...

You now have the hardest part, so go the rest of the way. Can you measure what RPM's your drill was spinning it, when you made 18 volts?

Also, what kind of tower can you put up, how high? If you can measure how much wind you have at that height, you will get many suggestions about useful prop size and expected output.

I pulled up the specs on the drill. It is rated at 550 RPM and I am using a 18v battery b/c my 14.4 batteries no longer take a charge. The Drill is old and has the burnt smell... I am guessing 350-400 RPMs. My municipality has a 30ft structure height limit (I can probably go 40' without too much recourse, as I have seen some homes with 40' roof peaks). Our avg wind here is about 8-10MPH (some days 10-13mph) with common gusts @ 20-25mph. We live on the edge of the hill country which puts us at a class 1.5-2.0 according to http://www.seco.cpa.state.tx.us/re_wind_maps.htm

NE1 have some expectations for this motor with this height, RPMs, and wind speed?

Just remember that a lot of those gear head motors are built to mount to that gear head and may not have much, if any, structure / bearings at the front of the motor case. And, I doubt they are built for any thrust loading at all.

Just reality rearing its ugly head.

After looking at the PDF spec sheets (link below) on this motor, it appears that this unit has ball bearings on the shaft. I am assuming this would be a good thing, right? According to the website, there are a couple of optional components for this motor, with the gearbox being one of those optional items.
