panel collector for dummy
« on: January 07, 2008, 11:15:53 PM »
First time posting here. My upcomming solar project is to build with a friend 2 huge warm solar collector of 12' X 7' to help to heat my shop under a 18' x 16' year-round veranda. l plan to use a few rows of pop cans as collectors(l have 2200 and wife says get rid of them, and use rouxul insulation -- made to stand 1200f --,  and an inch thick thermal glass when it's free The thermal glass dictate the size of the panel). We  have a tracking system (to follow sun path)that should work ok.

Our main challenge is to set the right air flow. l was thinking to use may be an unused air exchanger, but we are unable to get it  circulate the air at the right speed. Any suggestion on how to calculate the air flow?

Pretend it's a space heater with an electric heating element that is pumping a kilowatt of heat into the air for each square yard of panel(at high noon).  Set up air circulation to get the temperature rise you want with that input.

Here's a pretty good story on how to build a solar collector.  Scroll down a bit to 'rules of thumb'  You ought to find something there.  Good Luck
