5 k conversion complete

Well at last the 5k motor i picked up for $20 is converted.

4pole 3phase mags are 3 mags per pole 12mmx12mmx100mm. 1 mag installed per day and epoxyed in as they are incline to pop of when trying to put the last mag in, MANY TIMES, super glue would not hold them, still all done and epoxyed in. some pics and stats.

On the lathe for a test. only got 1 hp single phase lathe so it wont drive the gen much but got 2 readings charging a battery


  1. rpm 14.5 vdc 8 amps
  2. rpm 15.5 vdc 12amps


Any guess on what it will produce or the rotor size it will need the shaft is 38 mm/ inch & half

Hi Trivo!


so happy to see you have completed your genny. with the volt/amp you have at the test speeds, looks like it will be a superb low speed genny.


guesstimation: i think 2-3 kw will not be a problem with a well made prop (with low speed cutin that you have perhaps 11-12 foot diam).


without a large enough prop for that low cut in rpm, it will stall. if you can double up the number of circuits (2 delta instead of 1 delta, or the same for star) you could increase your cut in rpm and use a smaller prop. (just thoughts)


also looks like it has an aluminum frame, if it is, that is a big plus, will get rid of any heat build up easily.


i would love a few pics of the completed rotor if you get a chance

I have read your conversion post 20 times and the coil conection it still is a bit beyond me but i will have a guess. The open voltage @ 120 rpm is 30VDC  wired it up delta with the existing terminals. The terminals have two wires soldered to each so i guess that i seperate them and i will have 12 wires coming out of the motor the thing i dont understand is the conection of these. How do you know which one is which. On the cover below  there are 3 coil configeration marked coil 1) is A1 to A2  coil 2) is B1 to B2  coil 3) is C1 to C2 now if i seperate the wires on say A1 & A2 i will end up with 4 wires so do i just connect one of the A1 wires to one of the A2 wires and and that is it? if so which one to which one? i have inserted pics below and any help would be appreciated

hi trivo!


the wiring schematic shown is not numbered or coloured according to north american standards. in my connecting post, i show how to connect the coils and number them per standard "nema" configurations. usually the motors come with nine lead wires and is easy to install the other required 3 lead wires which can be traced from the existing other numbered ones. so in order to make your motor a 12 lead unit, would require to trace out the polarity with a compass and number accordingly. you really need to know what you are doing there.


but, in the photo, you have only 6 lead wires, and from what i can see, is now connected for Y configuration. the 3 metal gang plates connected on the one side indicate this. on the name plate, it says 415 volt with the delta symbal. if you connect as per the name plate instructions (blue and red connected by one of the connection plates, gray and brown, and white and yellow) should give you the delta connection. to confirm the connection, use an ohm meter between where the incoming power lines would connect, left and right, right and centre, left and centre. the resistance should all be the "same"


assuming you did your testing in the star connection, the delta connection will raise your cut in speed and also give the unit more current handling capability.

That is A very nice conversion. Congrats! That would be a really good candidate for hydro since it wouldn't take a lot of gearing to raise the rpm from a standard water wheel.


If I am reading this correctly you used 12 rectangular magnets about 12" by 4". I too would love to see some photos of the finished rotor. How did you allow for the skew with a flat magnet or was it not that big an issue at that angle?


Did you simply remove only the material where the magnets were to be placed or did you turn down the entire rotor? I was concidering drilling holes in a rotor and gluing or epoxying the magnets in directly instead of using a cage on the 1.5 hp motor I have.

(OK, well not really, but it's a nice job!)


By the way, since you have 3 wire ends all tied together in the photo below, I reckon you've got it connected in star, not delta.

I should clarafy the conection. the pic was star and tested at 60+v 100rpm so i took the jumpers off and connected each of the 6 terminals to the rectifiers.

I did later try conecting the jumpers as Zubbly said and it was simmilar as the results published but with 3 leads.

I should be finishing a 2.5K conversion today and hope to post tomorow
