Battery Bank
« on: December 22, 2005, 04:15:13 PM »
BATTERY BANK:

The heart of the system, the soul I belive is up in the air.

 MY Bank:

One NEW Interstate "SRM27" DeepCycle @ 600ccA,   750 mcA.

One Old (From my Boat) SRM27         @ 550ccA,   690 mcA.

One old (Also from Boat)SRM29        @ 675ccA,   845 mcA.

Two AC Delco Voyager                 @ 400ccA,   620 mcA.

These Non-DeepCycle:

One Interstate 24RM  (Same Boat)

One "Cal 60"   (Core Pile)           @ 525ccA,   630 mcA.Need 2 look again might B D/C

One Value Craft (65-VL)              @ 675ccA,   840 mcA. ( Aging sucks, RAM soft)2look

one watercraft (small 12 VDC)

After I LOOK Again and write better notes, I need to figure Amh of Bank?

Will set Up as two Banks one DeepCycle and one NON-D/C string.

Will be using Battery Isolater for them on Poweer IN side

And a Battery Switch (1,2, or All) On Power Out side.

Will be using fuses and Diode's, I also am thinking about a re-settable circuit breaker

on the In-Side b4 ChargeController and fuse?

NC25A listed a 20Amp Fuse between Bank and it, I am thinking put the 15Amp CircuiteBreaker before fuse, Then a 20Amp blade style, then a 20Amp glass barrel style, then a 20Amp "Fuseable Link", (Two posts with metal strip between), Then the "BRAIN" of the system, The CHARGE CONTROLLER With Dump Load.

For the Dump Load, I"m Thinking about,

One string Of old lighters, (The ones you push-in and they pop out) wired par.

one string Of automotive 12 VDC lights, (Most non-headlight type).

Also would like to Use:

One 120VAC Waterheater element, (Must this be in water)?

One 120VAC Heater, (personal/portable type), (can this just be wired to elements w/12 VDC)?

(NO, The lighters will just be soldered together, not popping out when HOT, With computer Fan blowing Across, Also Fans, {same type and source} across Bulbs and Elements)

Feel free to Post any thoughts and opinions, (ADVICE)

RAM=Soft, lol

In, Power to be made with,

One 30 VDC Ametek, waiting for tower and better hub system,(Have sweet Yaw and Furl but will be tuff on wires entering pole below head, {will be low to ground, being in town with power lines overhead in backyard}).

One ServoMotor, problably VAWT "Lenz" type. (24 VDC, 1630 rpm, MaxCur: 36Amp, 3.1A curr, rating: Cont, output: 50W, weight 2.9kg

One Treadmill Motor, problably "geared-UP" being 2.5HP @ 120 VDC, 18Amps, 7100 RPM.

One "CMI, 643-206  ECM 643", PM Motor, Weight is 28Lbs, Once I figure out how to get power out of it, ($.99 E-bay with $24.00 shipping) has two plugs with 10 poles and one with 4 poles, but looks like "end-cap" can be removed, will try later.

Might even string a bunch of stepper's together also, Now that I have a dozen or so done, seems waist just lighting and burning up LED's.

I saw 50 watt 12 volt incandesent bulbs at Wallmart for about $1.50 each last week (in the camping section). With ceramic light fixtures available at Lowes (or any lighting place) costing around 3 bucks each, could be a better/different option (if you would'nt mind the light). Remember to stay below the wire amp rating. Just a thought... Gary D.

i think your battery bank is going to be only as strong as your weakest battery.

kind of like the weakest link in a chain.

even with a isolator and diodes, takes power to...so even a  lil weaker.

the pop out lighters are only ment for short bursts.

and yes the water element should be used in water.

but i have one i use for making bio oil.

and the lil personal space heater can be wired up. even the thermostat will work, but not the fan.

you can't solder the the elements, but iv'e used stainless washers with nut and bolt.

you will need larger wire to feed the thing.

what ever you to becarfulllllllll

Yea I know about weakest link, will be setting up as mutiple banks, using different gen's and "controllers" as soon as I get some more built.

" (can this just be wired to elements w/12 VDC)?"

I didn't really plan on solder to element, just wires inside and adding computer 12 VDC fans. I'm pretty sure old car lighters will burn out, they are all junk anyway to I figured to try to burn up a couple, (I have a friend with a "Bought" windmill that said his battery bank has never read 12 VDC so I'd like to burn up something with my "DUMP" load as soon as I can, while I'm still hundreds of dollars behind him).

Thanks for the info anyway.

I used heating element sections out of an old electric furnace. Just make each section long enough that at 12 volts they get 500 degrees or less. I just use an electrical ground lug on each end of the element and cinch the screw down. The furnace elements also have nice ceramic insulaters as well. As you need more control add more elements. For what its worth. RobC
