I started over with three new blades this time.it helped a lot to have the other one as a reference.

i took them for a spin in front of a fan , it was soo cool , i think i'll put a spinner on there to see if it helps at the root.

only 90% to go !

the funny thing was, i had them at the same angle on the first trial, but with the

wrong side facing into the wind, if ya know what i mean , they spun a lot faster that way , wonder what that means?

Below ,this looks VERY promising..

it is the blue styrofoam with enamel paint on it.

i hope that when i test this piece with glass & resin , the resin wont eat the blue styrofoam

below is the blue foam with two different patches of glass , the left one hardly sunk in at all , the right one bubbled up then sunk in. lol, i was thinking of using the polycrylic over the enamel paint , i guess thats next.

Hello,

I think you'll have more success using marine epoxy...and of course vac. bagging the glass is the sweetest! Keep the flat profile facing the wind for a mill...the opposite for an prop; that's why it's spinnin better now. Nice work! Gotta love that blue foam.

Somone else mentioned that before , epoxy doesnt eat polystyrene? that wierd , i'll have to try some ..

yeah , i would really like to use the blue foam on the blades , it carves like butter , and sands beautifully! and is non toxic , but it dissolves in Resin

i just looked it up ,the main ingrediant in Bondo all purpose fiberglass resin is styrene.. no wonder it dissolves polystyrene.

Ok it took a while but it FINALLY sunk in USE EPOXY on styrofoam...!!

i got some today and it is allready hard ( 5 min)

no bubbling no dissolving what so ever.. yay

i went to the dollar store and tried their epoxy , also tried West Systems epoxy, they both worked flawlessly..

below is the dollar store " superGlue brand on the left .

west systems G5 five min. epoxy on the right .

not the front , btw, the front was an earlier test with polyester resin.

These are some of the airfoils i used on the blades..only takes ten min. each to cut them out

Are those dowels you're using to connect your bades to the hub? I'm thinking that would be the perfect way to set up and test blade angles...maybe someone could come up with a simple centrifugal device to change the angle according to rpm's; feathering. I was leaning toward using a composite hockey stick as a spar and hub connecting point for my foam blades but I think round is better now! Like you i'm going to be cutting wood airfoil sections to secure the spar to. So far i have two beautiful blue 3' carved and sanded blades waiting to be cut into pieces to accept the wooden sections and spar. Thanks for posting your results.

Sketeboard Truck Rubbers! Thet come in many different compression ratios, can be set up in series...totally durable and replaceable. A lever at the end of the spar connected at right angles could rest on a bed of rubbers and compress the trailing edge proportionable to wind force on the blade.

Yes they are dowels , if you look in my diaries you will see one titled "pitch control diagram"

i havnt built it yet but thats after the blades i suppose, i've allready decided to use bicycle bearing hubs ( front ) as the bearing pivots..

It is just the mechinism , not the hub to hold eveythig together

but that could be shown by just a circle.

yes the mechanism is indeed the load bearing pice and needs to be secured to the hub VERY securely...lot's to think about...like bicycle and their pieces alot

Notice the blue foam on the ends i used epoxy to attach them.

i'm so dense sometimes , epoxy was recommended weeks ago by several people , i cant believe it took me this long to try it!!

i put a test coil in front of the magnets , just holding it there .

turned on the fan , at 250 rpm i got a whooping 0.2V peak , in all fairness the gage is way too big (at #17 ) , for such a small generator , but i had the coil on hand so i tried it..

# 20 gage should do nicely.

those magnets below the bearing , are dans 1/2" dia by 1/2" which i ordered a long time ago..

wait till you see what i have planned for this little baby!

a dual rotor three phase six coil eight pole wind machine , which i plan on putting out on the window sill..

I knew you would like it , it is from 5.25" HD .

it has everything one would want , the metal flywheel on the back where the magnets are attached is a little less than 2.7" in dia . perfect for eight 1/2" dia magnets.., actually 2.5" dia is all you really need for eight 1/2"dia. magnets

because they are centered on a 2" dia circle..

with six 1" dia coils of course,with 1/2" holes and you're good to go..!!

It has three mounting holes , to mount the stator onto .. some have four..

Confused.

I only have 1, 5.25" HD, Quantum Bigfoot CY (maybe ~Compaq 285462-001). Press fit hub / bearing. Nothing magnetic at all.

The 'top' has a screw through the cast Al cover.

Is that a part that came with the HD?

Also, I found out some HD disks / platters are apparently glass or a very similar material.

And, therefore, not exactly good for blade mounting or drilling operations.

Oops! :/

And since I 'broke the seal' the warrenty is void. Go figure.

I was going to send the platter back for a new one. He-he.

yes it came with the HD..

the platters are aluminum

this is the back of the HD motor.

minus the magnets & coil , lol..

this is the top wher the plattens go.and i've used the plattens to hold the blades in place, all you need is a longer screw, you can even use the origional platten top plate..

the coils are 1" dia. and are centered on a 2" circle , or a tad over.. 2.01" to be exact..

i just bought some carbon fiber tape to use on these , it should look very cool

i think i will use it on the blade facing the wind , where most of the tension is, then after i glass the rest of it i will use a white gel coat on everything except where the carbon fiber is..

the coolness factor will be awesome i think
