Don't you HATE it when
« on: March 24, 2006, 05:50:11 PM »
I hate when I only find one

when we need two to work.

:(

This is from a Bike that was

burned up some how and

was being parted out.

It had only the front forks so I'll never know

what it was to try to find

a match.

But the farm I was at had TONS of

stuff! :)

The farmer types here should know how easy

it is for them compaired to the "City" folks,

When it comes to having access to stuff and parts!

At least the son at the farm reconized what I had to

offer and will be a wind mill customer for me! :)

And he will also be a great source of parts n stuff!  :)

it must have been from a small bike , i have two sets , one i got from ebay , the other i found locally

the set from ebay is 10.850" dia , off of a 650 suzuki i think it was, the other is 11.6" dia.

ive found most bike front disk brakes have the same inner dia , but different bolt patterns , some six , some five..

looks like the front disk off a Virago. (yamaha 750 cruiser style)  they used that disk on a bunch of stuff from about 1980 to about 1992. I think I have one lying around someplace;  It's yours for the cost of UPS. (steelnomad2002 at yahoo) Somewhere on the inner part of the disk you will likely find a part number. . . . you may have to scrape some paint to read it.

Yamaha might still have some of those NOS;  let your fingers do the walking?

most large cities have cycle salvage places; there are a few on the 'net.

The steel they use for those disks is a corrosion resistant alloy, and may not do well for completing the magnetic circuit. I'd set up a comparison test (with, say 1014(?) steel AKA hardware store hot rolled plate) before I got to mixing resin. your milage may vary.

(in the useless trivia catagory:  the Virago uses the frame as part of the air-intake path, and oil from the PCV system can build up and ignite in a backfire, like if (say) you got the plug wires on wrong.  that might explain the "burned up" part.  Nope. . . never seen that happen.  <whistles off key>)

Huh.  I'd have figured a part number would be on there somewhere. Just about everything else on those bikes has a number stamped on it. . . (except the o-rings.  Grrrr)

the sizes sound about right for what I remember.

I won't be able to dig for the disk until this weekend at the earliest, as it's two hours each way from where I am at the moment. . . so don't dispair if I'm a little slow getting back to you.

(I might send my dad down to the shop with a tape measure?)

Anyrate, I havn't forgotten you; I'm just packed up with work and other spare time activities.

well, in case  Coldspot is still monitoring this thread:

I checked the disk I have.  it's 300 mm (ca. 11 7/8") in diameter, with an inner dia of about 8"

so much for my calibrated memory, eh?
