Wind steady at 50 MPH, Gusts to 70 MPH last Night
« on: March 26, 2006, 09:02:12 AM »
:(

Tonight, 50 mph with gusts to 70 mph

Took the blades, OFF of my Ametek 30 VDC!!!

Busted the ceiling fan blade mounts as

far as I can tell in the dark with 30 mph  50 mph

snow blowing.

I was asleep, girlfriend came in and asked me

if I took it down, "cause the tail is still up but

blades look gone".

So I put on some long johns and a robe

grabbed slippers and flashlight

When out back to see, not much.

Snow was building up to about 3".

Hope to find them today after sun comes out.

I knew my "Furl" was getting a bit bent off to one

side and didn't take the time to  repair or redesign.

To many other mills in the ready n waiting for tower.

Did score an other tower leg set friday night, so things arn't

ALL BAD. LOL

Just when I finally ran the wires out of the crawl space

to the outside of house and was planning on re-guying

one guy wire to get it off the ground and on the side

of the house, with the wires going to the tower with it.

Learning as I go. lol! :(

The Ametek Mill.

After the 70 MPH Wind!!!

The next Morning. :(

In the next door neighbors back yard!

Still NO sign of number three! :(

Closer look at the broken end! :(

After this I'm putting a wind pressure flap type

switch on all mills!

It will work as an auto shutdown with manual reset!

Resetting a switch to work a relay will be a lot easyer than

replacing blades and hubs!!

Rather than a wind pressure switch - why not real blade mounts?

Something done in industry is to make all safeties where they allow the machine to work.  That way if something fails, the machine stops, no-one gets hurt and nobody has to inform the next of kin.

When Fred's wind generator throws a blade through Dick's roof, it makes Dick sore.  Dick makes sure the city passes an ordinance where there won't be a problem with wind turbines shedding blades because there will be no wind turbines.

Food for thought,

Ron

Ron-

"real blade mounts"

I working on just that !!!

But, the ceiling fan blades did hold up pretty

good all things considered. The story I posted

back in Jan 06, about the "Real" Wind Mills up

on the hill folding a couple of sets of blades, (180')

didn't fold up the mini mill!

Story was remjoved from board by our moderators

for some only known to them reason.

I totaly agree with you !!!

I feel so bad that my Blades lit in somebody elses yard,

Luckly the next door neighbor has been wanting to ask me

about the little mill, his kids love it when it lights up.

As far as a "New Hub Plan" version 2-

I found in homedepot

Conduit couplings with rubber pinch to hold

that with box covers looks like they might make better

blade holders for the PVC and a few others.

Version 1 will still be used but with mods for better strengh.

With a few other "Safty first" mods also.

I did learn a lot from that storm.

Did you get the 70 MPH to 93 MPH winds????

How did yours hold up???
