10 magnets what to do?
« on: May 08, 2006, 06:28:37 PM »
I have 10 Neodymium Bar Magnet 1/4 x 1/2 x 2"  in the mail on the way,  what would be the best use of them to make a gen for a first timer.  Want to use wind eventualy,  but now  want to try babysteps to not scare me away from this topic i love so dearly.

No real objectives as of now,  just want to make electricity.  Preferably at least 12 volts.

Thank you all

I used eight of that size magnet in a small washing machine motor generously donated via my local Sears & Roebuck appliance service technicians dumpster...

I haven't used the generator in any purpose other then modifying it - but am saving it for maybe future camping hydro-electric use... from 212VAC to 55VAC depending on connections.

For best efficiencey the usual ratio is 4:3 (four magnets to three coils) so if you're thinking axial generator you'll use eight magnets to six coils

When you receive the magnets take two out to play with (and possibly damage) while keeping the other 8 in a safe location (out of reach of temptation) so when they get up to 1/10th light speed trying to anhilate each other you wont be chipping the work magnets...

wow thank you for the neat link,  and the great part i think i have an old motor similar to that,  only problem is  i was banging on the "axel" part trying to remove the old "lump" where the cruddy magnets are, and i nicked the "axel" and now it won;t fit back in the houseing,  but I'm going to try to use 8 magnets and make my own axel and try it,  and who know i might have to rewind,  but that is part of the fun of this great new hobby of mine  :)

thank you

A fine toothed machinists file w/ light strokes, held a bit diagonally will dress out marred surface imperfections, rotate file around circumference w/ each lap over dinked area so it does not 'flat' any part of the axle or shaft. Don't try to get it all at once, keep trying fitment to housing before removing too much metal.. (fine toothed bastard file & a drop of oil and 10 minutes)
