had this car alt laying around--so i decided to try it on my pedgen..
stock alt no mags and not rewired--surprized me it kicked right off without even a batt hooked up to it--just had a piece of wire from field clip to batt lug on alt...
once the field coil kicked in i could slow down my cranking speed--almost to a crawl and still get power out..the drag was kind of high with the wire from field to batt lug on alt--so i hooked up a 30watt headlite to the field and batt lug--plus a solinode to
switch on a 50watt headlite for power out...[took some time to figure this all out as
i was blowing headlites out every time the field coil kicked in]..
one other thing i did was to take the pully off and make a smaller shaft set up[just a piece of pipe slide over the alt shaft..any way this set up is only good for about 100 watts or more--but it does power up on its own...with a bigger pully i could of course
get a lot more power from it--but then i would need a batt to excite the field coil..
even a 9volt transitor radio batt would work--sence you just have to only momentarly
charge the field coil--for it to kick in..i belive the open volts was close to 50v
thats with me pedaling almost full out..
one thing that did surprize me was the low rpms to hit 12v with a 50 watt load-even
with a 100 watt load not much more rpms were needed..[thats after the field kicked in]
not sure of the voltage rating on this alt -no markings on it voltage wise[thrift
store speical 5 bucks-looked unused]so it may be a 24v alt??coils look to be the same as a 12v alt.. might be could for a water wheel set up or a windgen if it was controled.heres a short clip- 3meg.
