My windmill has survived a tornado?
« on: September 25, 2007, 08:12:20 AM »
In a post yesterday morning I wrote

We had a very windy night last night, the sort that makes you look out with some glee in the morning to see that the turbine is still there and gamely putting up with it.

I didn't realise how true this was untill I saw the news reports that evening, we apparently had a small tornado go through the village, and the buildings that are damaged in this news report are less than a mile away from me!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/derbyshire/7010189.stm

I sould point out that tornados are a fairly new event in the UK and any reports of them are taken with a pinch of salt here.  There are a large number of half-wits who think they've seen a bit of wind swirling around, shout 'twister' and start looking for the flying cow!

But still, this one seems at least semi-official, and my mill is still, as is the smug grin on my face.

Hay  Capt

Be care full what you wish for you just mite get ;)

The part of Ohio I live in is the tail end of  what is called  tornado ally .

The highest  recorded  straight  line wind event in Ohio was 110 MPH. On average  we get  3 to 4  storms a year  with gust  between   50 to 60 mph .

Then there are the tornados .

Its kind of hard to tell  some one that  what took the roof  off the barn  was a strong straight line wind event  or  strong  gust .

If It got damaged by wind  it had to be a tornado.

I got in to weather  spotting  thru  Ham radio. I have to take a class  each year to keep up the paper work and keep it official.

Believe me, I don't want a tornado, never have.  The roof on my house is gravity assisted in it's fixing, a really stong wind will result in a roof-topped garden. A tornado would really sort it out.

Someone last night mentioned a "straight line wind event", this is a new one on us too.  Never heard of that untill last night.

Truly laughed out load at that one. Thanks.

"Tail end of tornado alley"

Is that the northeast, or southwest end of Xenia?

I had a runin with a tornado awhile back without warning.

All of a sudden the winds died and a yellowish haze settled in and by the time i got from the shop to the house to check for warnings i could here trees busting.

Turns out it was only a couple football feilds away.

WOW the damage even an F1 can do.

Never had winds over 20mph even being that close.

Didnt go in the basement because i wasnt told to. LOL

Six degrees of separation kind of thing?

I lived in Niles in '85, Eastwood Arms, no kidding.

A 4x4' window completely open and never heard a thing but police/fire/ambulance sirens.

I was in the building behind the main building shown. It's visible in the background.  My place faced away from the camera, top floor, center.

I remember the tiniest details of that day. Weird? No. People parts tend to be memorable.

My wife's childhood dog, "Duncan", was born on that day.

Our dog had pups on 9/11.

One of my dogs 9/11 pups is now my pa-in-law's. "Kai" ('cay'enne pepper). They currently live 800 meters from Eastwood Arms, on Ravenwood.

Scroll to the bottom for the puppies...

Six degrees of separation kind of thing?

Wait.  Did I say that already?  Things are going in circles, like a tornado.
