1.5hp pmdc motor as generator
« on: October 22, 2007, 04:15:14 AM »
Currently on offer at ebay.  It has been there for about a month.  I'm sure it will sell some day.  There were two lathe motors larger than this that sold recently.

I'm really curious how good of a generator this motor would make.  To get real power output, would it need to be geared up?

It would not need geared up.  It'll start 12V charging at about 135RPM.

Looks like a nice motor.  Seems more than a bit steep at $500 for 'as-is No Returns' on eBay?  I expect it'll be there for a while unless someone needs that exact motor.

it would be good for a 24v system with about an 8' prop or so as long as the shaft size is large enuff you would have to look up a frame chart to be shure of that before buying....... but personaly i would not pay $500 for it you can get a simular one much cheeper if you keep looking.

Thanks for the comments.  I was just wondering how well this would work.  No intention of purchasing, a bit pricey and no place to fly it.

Ok so it would start making power into 12v at low rpm.  How many amps could you actually draw it is only a 7.0 armature?

It would seem to me a better match would a gear up of 3:1 to get the voltage in the range of a SMA Windyboy and use it for direct grid tie?  Then you stand a chance of using the full 1.5hp rating.

How does one determine a workable blade  dia for this size motor for 12v and 140v charging? How would the windyboy work with this motor?
