Carbon-neutral London home
« on: November 07, 2007, 04:50:44 PM »
Hi,

I found more fingers and toes to count on, and ignoring wind as I don't yet have any evidence that it's a viable source of energy for me in London, I worked out what it might cost to replace all my mains electricity/gas use with RE in the form of solar PV and GSHP:

http://www.earth.org.uk/ground-source-heat-pump.html

Now, my numbers suggest GBP50k, ie USD100k at the moment.

Considering that the small house that I live in was valued at something like GBP250k recently, ie USD500k, that GBP50k is not totally outrageous for equipment that should last 25 years without much maintenance, even if sticking to normal mains is much cheaper and easier.

Can anyone point out the obvious errors in my write-up and adding up?

The idea of zeroing out all energy used at home (including for my home office) is very interesting, especially if GW is actually happening.

Now, home mains electricity and gas is of course not everything, eg I travel into town a few days a week by train, and run Web servers round the world, etc, but it's quite significant.

And as I say, I don't yet think that wind can contribute much in urban London, though when my MotorWind turns up, and/or when I get my Betz-defying perpetual-motion nuclear VAWT working, that might all change!  B^>
