Track light Tower
« on: January 03, 2008, 06:57:01 AM »
Scored in 2008,  :)

Track light, or UniStrut maybe

This six section, cut/unbolted into three sections.

Total length will be 40', less base and pipe stub top.

Bottom side, will need base and tip up type using the half inch round tubes and letting the UniStrut leg be the pulled on leg,,.. maybe?

might fix the built in wires, that got a hack up job the removers did on it, only cut in two spots. All four wires. :(

Will put some plugs of all thread or something weldable into the round hollow corners

The top end

The solid triangle rods, .2"OD. 13" spacing between welds on any leg, (half that to the next weld on the other leg).

I'll strengthen up the welds with my little wire feed as soon as the couple feet of snow melts off.

The round tubes are 9 1/2" apart center to center. The tube to UniStruts closest welded on corner is 8 1/2".

I know pretty small but a better Anemometer tower

at the minimum.

I'll put my Ametek 30 on the top, soon, I hope!

:)

 Grow light hangers? Hydroponic trays?

  Looks like fun!

David-

Retail store light hangers

Plastic pallets, (Government issue)

"Looks like fun", Yea, But not as much as when I will get to put up my pipe parts to get a bit higher and able to put a larger blade area up.

I'm going to first try the Ametek 30, then maybe the 28 Lb stepper with 6.8' fiberglass blades.

I'll be able to tie this to a old wooden pole in a concrete base thats only about 10'-12' tall.

 :)

Yeah......it'd be fun to see what an ametek 30  could do up above the turbulance in some good wind....

I've seen a lot of Track Light Trusses

They were all made to hold up Tracklights

Not Wind Turbines

They were made to be horizontal not Vertical

it may work with a light weight turbine

with lots of Guy Wires

wooferhound-

Thank you !!!

"Trusses"

That word had eluded me for a week or so now.

"seen a lot"

OK, have you any advice then??

I've been wondering about the pipe mast mounting,

on the Unistrut leg, or centered in the middle of the three legs?

After the spring un-freeze gets here, I'll figure a different base, but for now I'm thinking about the 5"-6" wooden pole thats in a concrete base. Its about 10'-12' tall and this truss tower could be mounted up against it, for temp use and maybe only going up 27' for now.

The UniStrut corner on the Truss looks very strong, but the other 2 corners look Weakish. Using it would depend a lot on how heavy your turbine is and the Swept area of the blades. Your Top Guy Wires will be attached below the top of the tower fairly far so the prop Blades don't hit them. So the top few feet of the tower is unsupported and freestanding (so to speak). This piece of tower will see all of the thrust loads that the wind is making on the turbine.

The UniStrut part is interesting though. Another user was talking about using a Telephone Pole as a tower and attach a line of unistrut to the pole from the bottom to the top. He was going to fabricate a little car that rides inside of the unistrut track attached to a metal pole on the outside of the track. There would be pulleys at the top of the tower and a wire going from Ground level up over the pulleys and down the track to the Car inside the track. The User was going to be able to attach different experiments to the top of the metal pole and then pull the whole assembly to the top of the tower with the wire over the pulleys.

I don't think it ever got built. Wouldn't work for you with a wind turbine because the guy wires would be in the way.
