A good day at the junkyard
« on: January 23, 2008, 10:10:00 PM »
I've been thinking about wind turbine towers lately. I've got some 2 3\8" pipe but it just seems too skinny for 40' So I had about resigned myself to biting the bullet and buying brand new pipe.

So I was dropping off junk appliances at the scrapyard today and saw this.

It's 20' long and 3.5" OD, which I think 3" OD would fit nicely inside of for the top section. Notice the handy flanges already on there. I'll likely cut one off but the other looks like a nice sturdy place to tie some guy wires.

So I coughed up $40 and am now halfway as tall as I need to be. I Love junkyards!

There were a few other pieces of flanged pipe you could make a base from one of  them. Looks like that was a good find if you use the flange it makes a good base for things to sit on or bolt to them. Are those weldon flanges or screw on flanges? I might suggest that you look closely it they are srew on flanges to make sure they were not cracked taking them down. Just an idea.  Yes one mans junk another mans treasures.

Actually, I used a thick piece of plastic and got a little dent in the cab. I figure with 295,000 miles on it, that truck's only good for another ten years or so anyway :-)

Dang, we got snow last night. I wanted to go out and get more pipe with flanges today.

Yea, but a dent in the roof is going to lower the trade-in value in 10 years.

It's no fun unless you have to go out driving in it though!
