BMN Bankers ruin dollar, bring on gas wars
« on: March 17, 2008, 03:36:54 PM »
Welcome to a new week of Brian's Morning Newsletter. March 17th 2008

Good morning.

>From the accounts I am reading this morning it seems like this week the $#|+ hits the fan for our economy. The banking systems, or at least the big banks seem to have finagled themselves into a corner that no amount of borrowed money can get them out of. A prime example on a personal level, is a friend I visited this weekend who recently sold his house. He said that he sold it for less than the appraised value which the government had been taxing him for the entire mortgage period. Think about what this means. It seems to me that it parallels what is happening in the financial markets pretty well. Obviously, I'm no financial wizard, nevertheless if what I am hearing is even partially true: There is a group of investment bankers that sold out their countrymen for quick profits, and this is what started the housing bubble to collapse, then I think the people who are losing their homes should be allowed to lynch these bastards. There should be a place on our IRS forms to describe not only where money came from; "If others suffered because of listed profits." What I'm saying is duping low income families out of a place to live should be a crime. Let's free all the people in prisons convicted of victim-less crimes and replace them with soulless bankers.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. I agree with James Kunstler this morning that by bankrupting the country Bush and his ilk will bring the energy crisis to a head far before Peak Oil advocates were predicting. Think about this, if the dollar isn't worth the paper it is printed on and the United States no longer has a viable global services to offer, then oil producing nations will sell their remaining oil to countries that do produce a product, like China for instance. Certainly the United States' strong-arm tactics won't be influencing or more importantly intimidating the rest of the world like we used to. People are saying the inevitable depression is likely to be as bad as the 1920s depression. On the bright side we will finally be forced out of the Middle East with a depression here at home, because George Bush is doing everything in his power to bankrupt our government.

As you may know I finished the book, "World Made by Hand," in which James Kunstler draws a very bleak future in this country with the loss of the petroleum to which we have become addicted. It isn't that we ran out of oil all of a sudden and people wished they had listened to urban planners like Kunstler before it was too late. The very lifestyle for which Americans have been envied the world over has brought this crisis to a apex ahead of its time. Peak oil and Global warming are real, and the more excuses and arguing we do about these issues the quicker we'll see the results. Absolutely Americans who drive a hundred miles per day to work have everything to lose and nothing to gain by accepting any truth about an energy crisis. We have to work to earn a living. It's an ugly slimy topic and people with high paying jobs do not want to discuss it, especially with low income people who will be affected even greater.

The fact remains that cheap oil is running low, and what remains is going to skyrocket in price. People are going to get more serious about getting the last of the fuel. Now, matters are made worse because we let bankers and billionaires like the Bush's and Rockefeller's ruin the value of the dollar again. There were some far fetched notions in Kunstler's work of fiction. I think he was right on when he portrayed people in the future buying fresh food for $1000.00 per sackful. I mean, Christ this is already happening here. If you are unlucky enough to work for minimum wage in this country you already know your paycheck isn't enough to buy food, and heat your home, let alone pay $4.00 per gallon for gasoline. I had thought that only the wealthy would be driving in the next few years, further dividing the classes here in America. We may have a new crude awakening as the bankers proven to the rest of the world that the US dollar will soon not be able to buy a tank of gas for even a Hummer.

Yeah folks, remember the gas lines in the 70s? Now the investment bankers have their sights set on energy futures. Whoa boy, it won't take them long to milk every last dime from our addiction to driving. So you see, it isn't just the Saudis spending our gas dollars on lavish appointments, it is our own greedy countrymen inflating the price of fuel just like they did to the price of our homes. Yeah capitalism is working real well for them, but it is screwing everyone out of house and home.  Again, America has become a country of worthless money launderers. Why would the rest of the world need to sell us anything and what will we pay for it with? We seem to be making our once proud nation obsolete on a global scale.

That's all folks!

Sincerely,

Brian Rodgers

Not to start a political war however, Bush has been a ok president. Not everything he has done I agree with. He came to office when the country with in a recession, and brought it out with the tax cuts. Than 9/11 happened, which threatened to bring the economy down and he managed to get the country back from that. If Bill Clinton had done his job in office than we would not be where we are today.

Quote:

I think the people who are losing their homes should be allowed to lynch these bastards.

Should these people also be allowed to lynch those folks who sold their homes for equally quick profits?

And how bout the guy who sold his home and made a fantastic profit, and then was dumb enough to sign a note on a home where some other guy was making a fantastic profit by selling it?

Should he be allowed to lynch his banker before or after he's lynched for sccoping up a quick profit?

The dominoes fell uphill there guy, and it most certainly isn't just those rotten bankers, because everyone up and down the housing line was also scooping up quick profits....

But you're right.....the bankers should have never wrote a note on a home that was worth $40K in 1990 but is priced at $260K today and then allowed some guy who says "Welcome to Walmart" for a living to sign that note, knowing darn well that he can't afford to pay off that note....

But by the same token, the realtor should have known better.....and last but not least, the buyer should have known better......or was he looking to scoop up a fast profit in a few years too?

Heck......there's folks that talk about "sustainable living"....and think that there's too many people to sustain now....

Ya' know.......if we just lynched everyone who turned a quick profit during the housing bubble, all those worries would just fade away.....

The real scandal here isn't how many folks got fleeced.....but instead how many uninvolved and innocent people are going to get fleeced for decades to come because the dominoes fell uphill and our friendly government is trying to bail out all the "fat rats" using money they steal from homeowners and nonhomeowners alike......

As a consultant technically on my last couple of weeks notice from my main (banking) client, I still say that the banks are only doing what their customers want them too, and are NOT inherently evil.

One real problem is people speculating on properties instead of just living in them.  Without that there probably wouldn't be most of the credit crunch in the US (and UK) right now.  And then spending the equity that they don't really have...

Another real problem is wasteful conspicuous consumption.  Strangely, none of the very rich but hardworking people that I know well, including bankers and lawyers, throw their money around wastefully as much as stereotypes would suggest, or at least not while I'm watching.  It irks me that if the richest lawyer I know could make do with a decade+ old car and equally old clothes, why people claiming to be poor feel they have to spend money they don't have on designer trainers more expensive than any footwear that I've ever owned for example.  Celeb culture sets a bad example.

One of the reasons that I think RE is the right way to go is that it forces people to waste less.  Needless waste angers me.  Without any religious angle at all I see my role as a steward of limited resources, and I want to leave the world a better place in as many ways as possible when I go.  And not by being miserable wearing sackcloth and ashes either.

BOSS;

I am not going to comment on this post content directly.

I cannot go on without telling you that I think you are grossly off topic in this forum with political diatribe.

I know you seem to have gotten carte blanche from DanB but I still think you are posting these letters in the wrong forum. It will eventually lead to bad blood because, while I tend to agree with you on some things, it is the wrong place for it. And it has been allowed to go on too long already.

Just my opinion. I tried to say it nicely because I think it is important that you understand my point.

Plus, I could nuke these on language alone.

Please clean that up in the future or I will be forced to eliminate the problem. This is a family place, after all. I believe this is the third warning on language. There will not be a fourth.

History and repeating comes to mind here .I can remember doing hours of yammering about problems . This was a mistake .I wasted so much time and was for the most part depressed at the doors closing people going to war prices skyrocketing .If I would have set to task then at one problem I might have had some answers . Now older and not much smarter really I am resigned to a different method which helps on all simptoms I was so taken by .That is simplly to get busy on a problem and know that is the answer to all problems .

Wonders when a site dedicated to Re energy and rural living became a sounding board for political statements, Personally I'm getting sick of seeing your posts. Why not just start and maintain your own website and leave your opinions off here.

I'm puzzled about this situation. I waste very little time reading posts I don't want to read. I don't know if it's the way I view the forum or what. When I check in I go right to recent activity. When I see posts by Flux, Woof, Ghurd and other favorites I read them first. I also click on the Everything link and check out the latest stories. I click on what catches my interest and if it's not what I want to read then about 10 seconds in I am right back out. I usually don't click on a post with BMN in it and if everyone else who doesn't like it didn't click on it and reply, then the posts would be lost to the archives quickly. As is, nothing clutters the forum like posts about posts cluttering the forum. The moderators have the choice what to allow and not including language, it's their job and I'm fine to live with those decisions as well as living with any of the complaints I choose to read. In my world this forum consists of only what I choose to click on.

Usually, I ignore your rants, but I have to say you do not see the big picture.  I recently saw a program that stated we currently import more oil from Canada than from Saudi Arabia.  Do some research.  The U. S. is the Saudi Arabia of coal, and you can make gasoline from coal.  The Germans made it from brown coal during WWII.  We have massive untapped oil reserves on the north slope.

Our main problem is a dysfunctional Congress that pays subsidies for ethanol production from corn that requires more energy then you get back.  What a waste, not to mention the effect on food prices.  What does the Book of Revelation say about the cost of food versus oil in the end times?  To top it off, Congress allows a one way trade with China, which means we end up subsidizing their purchases of oil.

I've been tracking the mortgage foreclosures in my area for the last few months.  What bothers me is the poor saps that are losing their home over a 20 to 25 thousand dollar mortgage with a 6 to 7 percent interest rate.  What did they do wrong?  Who cares about the idiot that borrowed $250,000 to buy a house, where average house prices are 80 grand or so.  That person is getting what he or she deserves, in my opinion.  The banks or Government could help ten of the people with the low balance mortgages with the same money it would take to help one with the quarter million dollar mortgage.  Why aren't they?

So, lay it all at the feet of Congress.  Or to put it another way, vote out all the incumbents.  Write a letter to the editor of your local paper.  Just do something constructive.

Brian's Morning Newsletter March 18th 2008

Good Morning

I can't see this morning whether the banking system collapse is cascading or temporarily impeded by more imaginary money infusion from the equally bankrupt government. Why is that Brian? Isn't everything serene and in perfect order in Mr. Rodgers' neighborhood this morning? Well almost everything is perfect. Something is up with the Internet this morning. I quickly checked all the gear from our network to the mountaintop relay and all our gear is functioning as it should. This is always a relief, but I feel for the guys at Desertgate Internet where I work who need to figure out these problems with all the new equipment they are adding to their Wireless Internet system there in Las Vegas. Day or night rain nor snow when the Internet has a hiccup people start calling them. I am glad its not my responsibility to keep it running. Anyway, I won't call to ask them as I'm sure plenty of users have already. Instead I will build a newsletter off line and copy it to a flash drive and haul it to town. Which reminds me it is about time to back up the BMN mailing list anyway.

Howling wind day before yesterday kept knocking out the electricity. I was trying to watch a DVD. Every time the juice quit I had to go through five menus to get back to where I was. So I went out to the work truck and snagged an extension cord with the intention of plugging the entertainment system into one of our battery backups. First, I whipped out my new handy dandy Kill-A-Watt meter and checked if the battery backup could handle the power needed to run the entertainment system.

Like most of the gadgets around here the battery backup system (UPS) has been modified from the original. At some point the battery gave out and I soldered cables in place where the old battery was. These cables extend out of the box as it were and have battery clamps on the ends. For a long time I had a deep cycle marine battery hooked up. This will greatly extend the length of time the UPS will run devices after a power outage. However the electronics inside the UPS are still limited to the original power consumption, in this case, it was a 600 watt UPS. This means the devices must not consume more than 600 watts and less would be better. Last time I tested the 35" television with the Kill-A- Watt meter it read 90 watts with a blue screen. I didn't really believe it then so I tested it again, and this time I plugged a surge strip with everything connected: 119 watts. Cool. There was enough juice left over to plug Nell's night breathing machine in as well.

Weird how our priorities concerning electrical devices change with the times. Sure keeping the refrigerator cold is up there, but for now we are only looking at solutions for these short intermittent outages. Probably what we should be concerning ourselves with is what will happen in the future. Will the utilities be able to keep up with population growth? Will future generations be subjected to energy rationing? For this type of scenario a different type of power system would be needed. Let's say the power will be shut down in rolling blackouts for a day or two at a time. Wouldn't it be wise to prepare for this type of power loss? This being the case we would need a good battery back up system capable of running the bare necessities in our home. One thing that James Kunstler's book, "World Made By Hand" made clear is rural homes which rely on well water pumped with 220 volts AC were useless with no electricity.

Getting the water from our wells is very important. As we will attest to because our water froze somewhere out in the field this Winter, modern lifestyles rely heavily on running water. It is my intention to build an alternative energy system for this house that augments the grid power. Even if the utility company electricity charges batteries when the power is on it would be better than nothing. Once we have the batteries in place we can add photovoltaic arrays and wind turbines to for recharging the system. Why not use the grid if it is here, even if it should become unpredictable?

Okay, I see the Internet is back, thank you Desertgate. I need to get going to work. Quickly, I sent Nell in using the VW Rabbit, clunker that it is. I drove the little diesel Rabbit yesterday and was totally impressed with its performance. We are out of biodiesel, except for the pickle jar we have sitting in the front yard to let us know if it is too cold to use biodiesel. Well we don't need it because it hasn't clouded up in a month so I poured it in the tank of the white Rabbit totaling less than a gallon. This showed up on the Rabbit's fuel gauge as a ¼ tank full, it was on reserve. These cars are new to us so we don't know what the fuel gauge readings mean yet. Anyway I drove to Rociada about 15 miles to do a quick service call at Chacon Belts and Buckles and then back to the ranch with a stop at Sapello to mail back our Netflix movies. Around 25 to 30 miles there, then I had lunch here and drove the Rabbit to a second service call on the dirt road halfway to Las Vegas airport. When I was done there I drove on into Vegas on the dirt road. I spent the rest of the day running errands in town and made it back home at 6:00PM. The little Rabbit fuel gauge read reserve again! It had used one gallon of biodiesel to drive somewhere in the vicinity of fifty miles! Saaweeeeet.

See yas tomorrow then, K?

Boss,

In the beginning I got pretty annoyed over your stories. But I've tuned them out. I consider it like the cars and trucks that drive in my street - I don't hear them anymore, they're background noise.

In your defense, I fail to see much cursing in your posts and the occasional d*mn doesn't hurt my feelings. Then again, I think Americans are a bit more sensitive to it than people over here. However, your postings are entirely off-topic. Even for a diary, IMHO. If 100 more people started posting stories as you do the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) would go below zero.

Frankly, I don't care anymore what you do or don't write. Anything with your nick in it gets ignored. Nothing personal, but I'm more interested in RE. If it were my board I would have cut you short but it isn't. The next best thing I can do is ignore you.

Peter.

My advice, before the majority of the people end up hating you for life, is go start your own blog on your own site!

Yes i did, i'm tired of seeing this site get used for things other than intended,i just learned he has his OWN website, so WHY does he have to copy/paste his stuff here?

Is he just wanting to ride the coattails of a popular site?

The comparison to Clinton is unfair. One slept with an intern, the other screwed the whole country.

Hey Capt;

The "B" word top line. As I just posted in the other area. It's not that the word is that bad, but why here? Where I've talked people into looking into this wonderful resource? They have little kids, one's I've given AAs to so they too can learn the idea of not being a throw away society any longer and that even in play, you might have to wait your turn.

Plus he used the word wrong. Unless of course he can prove his statement.

Cheers

Dinges,

I could not have put it in any better context than you have. I agree entirely.

And Tomw, I don't wish to shock you too much, and hope this doesn't topple you over the edge, but I am probably in agreement with you as well. Get better soon...
