Permission to take PV System to 5.16kWp
« on: January 21, 2010, 12:35:07 PM »
Hi,

I'd like to expand our grid-tie PV system once again to take up the remaining space on our small roof.

This would get us to over 5kWp of PV driving over 4.4kWp of inverters, though as the panels are on east- and west- facing roof surfaces it's virtually impossible for everything to be maxed out at once.

However, this expansion takes us over the 'G83' UK threshold where the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) cannot refuse an installation, which stands at 16A per phase, 230V/240V.

So we've asked them nicely (well, the installer who's put in my first and second rounds did) and the DNO has given us the OK today.

Next up I have to convince my other half, the council because of covenants in our deeds rather than planning permission (though we might be getting big enough to have to consider that), my electricity supplier, and consider the complications of the new Feed-in-Tariffs coming in and the effect on a system spanning old and new schemes.  Indeed the new one might have to be considered entirely separate for simplicity.

However, at over 4kWp inverter output on a sunny day and (eventually) an 'instant' (air-to-water) heat-pump with a decent CoP, I reckon that we could match our current natural-gas hot water delivery (~24kW in, maybe 18kW out) directly from our panels with no grid draw and no carbon footprint!  Of course, at the other end of the year in winter, we might draw as much as 9kW from the grid to match our combi, but that's still OK.

So I'm very strongly leaning to finishing off with PV rather than doing any solar thermal, and also a bunch of 'Kingspan K-18' dry-lining.  My aim remains zero-carbon for primary energy.

Rgds

Damon

PS. I may also try to sneak a bit extra PV onto the roof for my off-grid system.  That may be tricky for various reasons though...

DamonHD Electric Generating Ltd.???

If/when you sell the house are you going to list it as a residence or as a "Power generating business with attached living quarters"?

Once you max out the space, what next? Nuclear?  DamonHD Industrial/Residential Flux Capacitors Ltd.?

I don't think we've seen any pictures lately?

Here's a pic of the front (2/3rds of the current grid-tie, about 2.6kWp):

A light dusting of global-warming flakes can be seen, beating back the photons...

I do hope that if/when we move that the PV system (and the house generally being zero-carbon and hopefully 'A' rated for energy efficiency) will add substantially to the house value, though who can tell these days where the (housing) market is going?

Well, it isn't so bad.  And actually the local council has been quite helpful and keen; just got to see if this is a bridge too far for them or not...

Damon;

I'm with ZAP on this one :).

Let me know before you start trading public shares, I'll dig out my shiny pennies and jump on that bandwagon <LOL>.

Pretty imperssive, how's the Chairman of the Board taking all this?

Cheers;

Bruce S

I looked at the pics. Seems you are also growing biofuel on that roof! Look at all that grass!

Shhhhhhh, you're giving away all my secrets.

And yesterday I did sign up for Ecotricity's new "Green Gas" tariff, so maybe before long those 'flare vents' can be blocked off and redirected back into the gas mains.  "That's cooking on gas!" as the expression goes.  B^>

New panels going up today...  (Removing existing panels on that roof, then redoing the frame to take all 12...  Scritchy noises above my head as I type...)  Local Building Control was getting a bit twitchy about the loading on the roof so we got a structural engineer in to verify that all was fine.

Not actually got a date to get the inverter and other A/C work done since hens have more teeth than suppliers have SMA inverters at the moment.  So just solar bling for a little while!

Only the Paranoid Survive...

Good job I'm keeping a fairly close eye on this project.

On Friday when the scaffolding was going up I made a call to the subcontracted scaffolder (since I couldn't be at home) to make sure that everything was OK, and it was ... except for the fact that the scaffold was going up at the wrong house...  So they had to take it down again and put it up at my house this time.  %-P

Then, just checking with the PV install crew that they were putting up the agreed extra mounting rail for possible expansion of my off-grid system I got the "what extra rail?" response...  They are doing it at this very moment with good grace, it has to be said.  I may have rather delayed their lunch and robbed them of all their spares...

Anyhow, I have the whole of the existing PV system up and running again, hitting about 2kW now, but it'll be possibly a few weeks before my new SMA inverter is in and ready.  Guess who's gonna be the squeaky wheel until then?  B^>
