the last time i got involved with electrolysis was about 40 odd years ago, as a science fair project,, even then the college professors that did the judging were very negative about its prospects and i received a 3 place.
stepping forward 40 years to now, my attitude has been no different than that which was reformed by those professors all those years ago, it just don't make any sense to spend more energy to make less energy, however...
we expend 4 times the btu value of gasoline to make an alternate form of energy to power our cars, or about the same to power a genset to charge a battery bank
so i guess it can be said that it doesn't make much sense to do that either.
i don't know what the energy efficiency is to make hydrogen with electricity, but
if it is ~85% then it is about on par with charging a lead acid battery?
failing all that it might be an alternate and useful use of the wasted energy that is shunted to a dump load resistance heater bank from a wind turbine?
perhaps on a windy day after the batteries are fully charged and the controller shift to dump load, instead of just heating wire, maybe you make some hydrogen?
maybe enough to cook a meal with?
can't imagine driving a car very far with the production of a typical windgens dump load surplus power, at least not many days out of a year.
just a thought
