What pressure do you expect (or what is the head) and what size is the pipe?

You are correct to want a pressure gauge just before entering the turbine. I have a small hydro unit with a turgo runner. I have found the gauge invaluable for trouble shooting. Your static and dynamic pressure changes will alert you to-air in penstock, intake restriction, and nozzle obstruction.

Just to help you determine the gauge range you'll need, measure the elevation between the water level in your penstock and the turbine. You should get about 19 PSI per 10 feet of head (if I remember correctly).
