water wheel Is it worth doing something with?
« on: January 22, 2009, 12:13:39 AM »
The wheel has a cast ring of teeth round its circumferance and a output wheel of about 2' diameter it has a pipe of 1'dia. leading to it and under most conditions could probably be filled.

Is it likely to financially viable to put a generator on this and grid tie it or is the cost going to outweigh the benefits.

I have tried to find out what make of wheel it is but I beleive it is similar to a Fitz, however as it is in Scotland this is unlikely.

It looks well worth doing something with.  Does it turn at the moment and where abouts is the pipe that feeds it?

(I wish it was in my garden).

Dunk;

can i grid link this on 230v of a hugh piggot generator and whatwillit cost!!

The sad fact is the answer are "Unlikely" and "A lot".

The commonly built machine here is totally unsuited to direct grid feed. Period. End quote.

Sorry but facts suck some times.

I kinda thought that may be the case nice to get an educated second opinion though!I have other options one of which is low head high volume 8m head 300l/s at a low water conservative estimate. It would need about 100m pipeline.

Other on is about 100m head with 10 l/s that would need a 400m pipelne. both are a distance from 3 phase grid, latter 500m first one 1000m are any of these suitable for linking to single phase line or do i need to be on 3 phase?

Dunk,

You give so much information.

There are websites that will tell you the potential of the mill and of your resources. You will need to assess the cost of getting the thing in operation. You will probably need to get some sort of government approval.

If you have a use for the power, it may be worthwhile to use all you can. If you care to grid-tie, you need to research the 'how' of that.

Once YOU get all of the answers to the questions only YOU can answer, then an assessment of the information, including the social and economic considerations,  can be made by YOU.

Good luck. I wish I had the water resources you claim to have. Having a large portion of a water system already built is a bonus, it it can be used.

Dunk,

The generator type is the easy bit... a 3 ph induction motor and gearbox takes care of that.(for single or 3 ph) cheap as nuts but (and there's always a but).. everything else is as Ron says.

I'm drooling over the water resource though... drought on here at the moment.
