Will this be suitable for a first time wind gen?
« on: March 08, 2005, 02:25:03 AM »
Hello, I have been reading all I can and am about to take my fist crack at building a small wind gen. I was wanting some input of if the servo motor I just bought will be a decent choice. I am not looking for anything to build a lot of power yet, just something to get started with. Here are the stats on the small sanyo-denki servo motor. 20 volts, 580 RPM, nom current 5.7 A, max current 30 A, rating: cont, 70w.

Any thoughts on if this is a suitable choice to get my feet wet in the world of wind power, or should i look for something else?  Thanks for any replys.

Sounds a lot better than the first 10 or 20 things I tried.

I hope it is a permanent magnet (PM) motor.  I think some of those are not.

Well you'll needt 416 RPM to reach 14 volts to charge a 12V battery so it's doable, get some Jerry blades and build!

Thanks for the info, now I am worried about it being a PM motor or not ;) I just assumed that most DC reel motors were, but I will find out when it gets here. I have my eye on a couple of others on ebay just in case. Seems like you can never have too many.

I have a 5 ft piece of 10 inch pvc that I was going to try the zubbly-woolfer idea on, but i really have not been able to find how much success people have had with those blades. If they don't do well, Jerry will soon be hearing from me. Thanks again for all your help.

If it was ID'ed as a "servo" motor then it should be PM but if the seller got it wrong then it could be a series wound and then you have a problem.
