MY FIRST CONVERSION
« on: October 10, 2005, 11:56:48 PM »
Hello everyone !!This is my first post on this forum but I have been reading

about all the great work you guys have been doing on motor conversions

and was inspired to try one myself.I have no electrical knowledge or experience

but I was helped along the way with a lot of advice from Zubbly. Thanks , Zubbly.

Here is my first successful conversion unit. I'll post some test results soon.

I am now in the process of setting up a pulley system to do some tests.

For this conversion i used four curved skewed anti cogging N40 magnets.

Each magnet measures approximately 1.75" x 1.25" x .25".I have no info on the

motor except that it is a  standard 3 phase belted fan motor that used to

drive blowers in a heating/cooling system. This was confirmed by Zubbly.

The shaft measures 5/8".The motor already had 12 lead wires so i did not have

to do any rewiring .There is no cogging with the skewed magnets.I can easily

turn the shaft with two fingers.i had tried this conversions first with

four curved magnets that were not skewed and there was some cogging. With

the skewed magnets there is no cogging .I did try to do some tests using a

cordless drill but i do not know if i am using my meter correctly. Before

rectification i am getting 57VAC at about 354 RPM when i set the meter on

the 200 mark for ACV.After rectifying i did the test again. When i set

the meter on the 1000 mark  I am getting 251 VDC at 1160 RPM and 71 VDC

at 345 RPM.When I set the meter to the 200 mark I am getting 70VDC at

1160 RPM and 20 VDC at 345 RPM.What am i doing wrong ?All these tests were done with out load.

Good job Tropical son. The measurements you give for the skewed magnets is exactly the same for the old #29 curved NEOs.

Are you willing to give your source for these skewed curved NEOs? They sound like a motor converters dream come true.

OH your pix didn't come through for me? Would love to see them.

Tropical,

I suspect that if you were to offer them for sale on this site you might get a few

buyers and save the E-bay fees.

looks like you have room two double up on your mags lenghtwise......

more amps and a few more volts...

Hi,

Thanks for good pictures Tropical_son, I can see from first picture that You connected Multimeter wrong. Black wire should go to multimeter's lowest contact hole named COM. Red wire should go to middle hole when you measure Volt's or highest hole when measuring current in 10A scale.

Please measure shorted circuit current on 10A scale. Then you have idea how mutch power you can take from this motor.

I made similar conversion from old washing machine motor. It was only one phase motor. I add 4 curved neo magnets, taken from 2 old scsi hard drives. Simply machined down some metal from rotor to make space for magnets. Because it was 220v motor, output voltage was 25 - 50 V at low rpm. Only current was below 1A.

No cogging. Easy to spin and get high voltage at low rpm.

Yes I have room to double the magnets but then I have to rewind the stator!
