Battery minder, battery defender, or ?
« on: March 01, 2005, 07:42:25 AM »
I need a charger that will charge both SLA batteries and plan old flooded batteries. I am looking at either:

Battery Defender

Or

Battery Minder

Are these things any good? Are they worth the extra money over a $10 charger without a desulphator? Will they do a good job with both sealed and non sealed batteries? Are there any other chargers for around $50 that are better?

What type of charging are you planning on doing? The first charger you listed only charges at 3A and the second is only 1A. If you'll repeatedly be charging up heavilly discharged high Ahr batteries, you'll want a charger that has a higher amp rating. My Schumaker supposedly has a desulfater in it. I'm not sure what to think of this technology. I haven't been able to bring any dead batteries back with it yet and I haven't done enough testing on old batteries to see if it makes a difference or not. Sam's club has a 2/20/70 Schumaker for about $50. Like this one.

I use the Deltran Battery Tender, 800ma, waterproof.  This is the only charger I ever found that is actually regulated to 13.7 Volts, making it good for very small SLAs (7ah).  It is a switching regulator, making it work on a mod sin wave inverter, and uses less than 1 watt after the battery reaches 13.7v.

I use them for small SLA batteries around the house, and on 35ah SLA batteries for back up sump pumps.

But those sound similar.

My gripe is most chargers will get a 5 or 7ah battery cooking at 16v quick, No matter what the box says.

The 3.26MHZ seems a little fast for a desulfator ?

Like Volvo Farmer said- They don't put out many amps.

I only need something small...I've got a couple gas powered chargers if I need quick charging.
