« on: December 10, 2011, 08:36:29 AM »
how can I use 230 volt solar panels for a 24 volt turbine set up?Can this be done with a stepdown transformer?OR?

You would be better off using the transformer on your turbine and jacking that voltage up to 240V.......

On a serious note, you need to do a bit of 'learning' on electricity, its' transmission properties and several other things. I'm not in the education business and few here are knowledgeable enough to get you up to speed in a few posts.

A lot more information, a bit of research and you explaining what you desire to achieve will bring more productive reports on your post.

thanks for your reply Ron.I found a guy in simcoe Ont.who is selling 20 230 volt panels(cracked glass but working from an industrial install )for $120 per panel.I had originally thought of using them to heat water and to recirculate it thru a rad in the house totally seperate from the turbine.Mabye thats the way to go.

Are you sure these are 230V, not 230W?

First thought I had, too.

Volts, Amps, Watts, it can be cornfuzing for folks new to the addiction.  ??? ;D

Just got back from picking one up for 100 bucks. We put it in the sun and it put out 268v!These are Sharp NAV128H1 238vdc 600volt system max panels.Inspected in aug 2011 but cracked glass.Still hoping to use 5 or so panels to heat water maybe and recirculate it thru a rad in the house.

Stick them in parallel and connect to a water heater with a 240 volt element.

The panesl are 128W right? so figure ~ 600W

I don't know how much water you are planning to heat, but that seems a little low on wattage... I could be wrong

I hope you realize 268 VDC is easily lethal and will jump a hefty gap given a chance.

Just a safety heads up. In case you were not aware of this.

ged-
i wouldn't pay much at all for cracked glass panels.  i got a few for free and repaired them.  i noticed the VOC didn't seem too affected by the glass, but the ISC (amps) seemed slightly less than half.   if it were me, i'd offer $50 per panel.  these are oddball panels with cracked glass.  that marked is very small, and i'd doubt you'd have much demand from other folks.

here's a story about how i "repaired" my cracked glass panels if you care to read it.

I alwasy wondered if it was just a single hairline crack, whether the windshield patch stuff you can buy at auto stores might help?

every solar panel i've seen is made from tempered glass.  when it breaks, it breaks into a thousand pieces.

I broke one of mine in 2003 by dropping a 4x4 post on it, and it shattered into 1,173 (or thereabouts) pieces, but held together on the panel. It's still running to this day, putting out 96% Voc,  77% Isc, and 76% of the working current, all compared to the other identical unbroken panels. Since the system is still adequate for my purposes, I never bothered to fix it, and I'm quite happy with the apparent robustness of solar electricity.
