Wind Generator Science Project Kits
« on: December 11, 2006, 04:30:05 AM »
Hi,

I was wondering if I could get some feedback on how much I should charge for a little wind turbine science kit that I just started selling.  Normally, I'm not in the business of reselling things, but after fiddling with making my own baby gennies for my personal research for so long, I got really appreciative of the WindLab Junior when I came across it.

Pitsco sells their version of the same type of kit for $295(here is the link: http://catalog.pitsco.com/store/detail.aspx?CategoryID=27&pt=3&ID=2642 )

I just think that is completely overpriced and ridiculous for a toy.  Anyway, to get to the point.  How much should I be pricing these kits at, and what kind of a retail place is a good place to start selling them?

Thanks,

Syed

I really liked that MiniGen kit...a lot.  Thanks.

I'm getting off subject here, but one of the pictures from the MiniGen site got me curious about the general concensus around here.  What is preferred...HAWT or VAWT?

Hmm,

Do you want to make money, or are you doing it for the benefit of children learning, "Green?" A good rule of thumb is look at what is out there, then equate it to yours. Is yours better, higher quality, easier to use, safe for little fingers, are you infringing on someone's patent? How much does it cost you to make, include a reasonable cost for labor as if you have to pay someone to build it for you. Remember you have to pay taxes, insurance for on the job injury in some states, Bla Bla Bla. If you are just having fun and making some kids happy locally try to make enough to get it to pay for it's self. A good rule of thumb for a specialty product in the 200 dollar range is 40%, but that is just textbook. You have to work out whether this is going to pay your salary or just a few bucks to buy toys for the hobby. I am a believer in anyone with good service can make a go of just about any business, but it will take years to get most businesses in to the black where one can take off full time and enjoy the endeavour. There are a couple of things to decide: Who is my target audience? This is important, who will be buying the product, kids or the parents. Figure a way to advertise and reach that target audience. And make sure you believe in your stuff because it's so good it will revolutionise the industry because it is the best price of all of the units out there and the biggest bang for the buck in the whole world! Oh yea, number two, Service, Service, Service. Good luck!

Just sitting here on the sidelines....you're

right...harsh reality does take some of the fun out of

it doesn't it ?

I'm retired, but havin' a lot of fun

my lament is too many ideas and projects and

not enough time....LOL !

None of it is work, all just fun !

I just prefer VAWTs, for bad locations and low

to the ground applications....gusty winds that

change direct a dozen times in as many minutes,

it's frustrating in these circumstances to watch

a HAWT flipping this way and that ...never really

getting down to really producing anything.
